Welcome to another episode of “History Today” where we bring you news relating to history and archaeology that is changing how we view the past.
Recently Irish Central published an article titled “Ancient bones reveal Irish are not Celts after all.
The article deals with a discovery in 2016 in the Irish County of Antrim and could completely alter the perception that Irish people are descended from Celts.
We discuss the article, what the experts are saying and lastly I give my thoughts as well.
I think it is important to remember the dangers of misconstruing Ancient DNA Studies to generalize untold numbers and populations of peoples and if we are not careful, we can contaminate an already complicated past.
I also wanted to note that I have always associated the term “Celtic” with language and material culture rather than term dealing with genetics and centuries of scholarship has had a similar stance and so, I feel that we need to be careful when using “Celtic” as a reference to DNA which could exclude other peoples who share in the material culture and language in the Celtic world.

As far as I can recall the Celtic origins has been considered 'unlikely' for a while now. There are very few if any traces of La Tene or Hallstatt culture in Ireland. Linguistically Gaelic also seems far removed from the known Celtic languages. So Ireland would only be considered Celtic in a very modern sense of the term.
What's the big surprise? It's common knowledge that there were people in Ireland before the Celts arrived. Migrating people would normally interbreed with the people they met in new lands. The whole thing is a "DUH" moment for me.
I think they were Picts
I am Irish , DNA test flags County Cork. Ancient ancestors definitely went through the levant , I have a little Greek DNA also. I use to think the Celts were just a myth , until my daughters DNA test came back. Irish , London England , French , Proto – Celtic. So I guess now the story of the Irish and the Celts still lives on !
1:28 it was at this point i poured myself a drink.
So who were the ancient population then?
There's some major clickbaiting going on. Saying there were people in Ireland prior to the arrival of Celtics peoples is well-established. The same is true of Britain. It is known that the arrival of Celts in Ireland is relatively recent, perhaps 1500 BC or so. They spoke an early form of Celtic, an ancestor of Irish. It is hardly surprising that the newcomers may well have overwhelmed the people already there, resulting both in extensive intermarriage and in the ancestor of the Irish language displacing the language of the original inhabitants. It's fascinating and much is unknown, but it's happened time and again around the world. The Wikipedia article "Irish people" has some helpful information.
Irish People are descended from one of the Ten Lost Tribe of Israel …
The bible is true, japheth is the father of modern day europe and asia.
Interesting but not new
this has alwys been know. They were called the fomorians and also the firbolg. Most likely an offshoot of the Belgii
If you look at the Treaty of Arbagh. The Scottish people recount their history of coming from the Levant and across the Mediterranean up the Iberian peninsula. In it it refers to the Scots as scotoli and the connection is made with the Scithians (an Indo-Iranian group). This connection of Scottish-Irish-Iranian was explored under Shahs time but was often dismissed as monarchist propaganda. However the genetic evidence suggests that the Scots and Irish may in fact have come from the Near East.
Very interesting 👌 thank you.
Babylon is your origin so they are always welcome 🥰🇮🇶🇸🇾🇯🇴🇵🇸🇱🇧🇮🇪
The Bible could have told you that 😀
The Celts may have been there in 2000BC anyway… stupid headline for the article. Sensationalist.
It's like saying mecicans are Spaniards but they are mestizos
I like your take on this, the article quoted has a click bait title and flawed conclusions. Thanks for clarifying with real actual science and history. Articles like that one are how history and events become inaccurate.
Atlantean 1, search for 2, 3 and 4,

This is not news! Any undergrad in the subject knows the whole Celtic myth was cultivated in the 19th Century by poets such as Samuel Ferguson, continuing and culminating with W.B. Yeats & Lady Gregory, etc. in a surge of nationalism. The Celts originated in central Europe and were already in decline through intermarriage by the time they reached the British Isles.
A small group of bones does not rewrite Irish history. The vast majority of Irish DNA corresponds to a common origin of those in western and other parts of Europe (R1B stem) and this dispersal is the dominant haplogroup wherever Celtic-defined peoples lived historically. Whilst all nations are composed of various haplogroups the world over, R1B is massively predominant in Celtic associated areas. Its dispersal even matches known historically geographic Celtic expansions. (I'm Celtic & Ancient Historian & Researcher over 2 decades).
Jayson Tatum is a Celt
When something is being explained about the Irish it starts the explanation with music, great 🎶🎵
Tuatha de dannan = tribe of dan one of the lost 10 tribes of israel
Celt is more of a cultural title than an ethnic/racial stamp anyway
The earliest Irish settlers I believe were a Atlantean(Modern Mauritania) colonial Party are indeed misrepresented in their true contributions and true history and age. Michael Tsarion does some great research on this clandestine effort by the Institution running and writing the taught and preferred history of today to misplace Ireland along side other ancient world people when speaking of their Global impact and Importance, God Bless Ireland and all my Brothers and Sisters whom Call its lands home.
You never actually said where they are from. "The South Mediterranean" is North Africa. Check a map.
I wonder if you know the legend of the ' tuatha de dannan' a tale of ships coming out of a fog/smoke on the west coast of Ireland with a seamingly magical skill set. It is theorised by someone ( I forget who) that these were the daughter of the last pharaoh of Egypt and her people. Possibly sea peoples mentioned in the bible, the lost tribe of Dan of Hebrew origin and that the Egyptian princess named Scotia then went on to Scotland which is how it became named. Archaeological evidence is put forth to make these connections relating to buildings of similar and unique construction and the word 'dan' appearing in several place names where these building methods occur around the Mediterranean and western Europe at the appropriate time. A convoluted psuedo history from periferal and disperate elements perhaps but an interesting trail. I enjoyed your video. Thank you
Given that the Celts arrived around 4500ya, but European societies predate that by at least 30,000y, it makes sense that red-haired folks might not be Celts. Mayhap a Neanderthal got mixed up in the blend. Oops, have I pissed off the purists?
Once the irish intermixed with the Nordics they destroyed their lineage..
Irish people are very diverse.
I feel a big misconception of so called reptilian people are visually similar to gingers. If you look at some gingers the placement of freckles on some are exactly in the same layout to the scales on these reptilian people. I know it’s a reach but there are other clues as well as the rh neg factor as well as the association to copper. The blue eyes. There are references abroad to
Giants and enki as well to have these same esthetics. It’s my belief they are connected. Also you see it let a ginger and dark African mix and the African genes do not dominate when mixed you get a more equal blend. Let an average Caucasian mix with dark African and you may have a slightly lighter African. The African genes totally dominate. There is something to that.
My feelings are this is a matter of some individuals biased interpretation. So tell us, exactly which haplogroups, Y-dna and mt-dna, did these three individuals belong to? And how those haplogroups contrast with those of the so-called"celts" ?
UpTheRa
Ireland isn't a British Isle
Twelve thousand yea old bones of a hunted for food bear have human butchering cuts on them from native Irish peoples and that's pushed things a fair bit!!!!between ice ages
I believe the Biblical view, that many probably refuse to believe, is true. Mankind originated in the middle east with God's creation of Adam and Eve and the people hung around too long in that area not spreading out as they were suppose too. This leading to their building of the Tower of Babel and subsequently God changing their languages so they couldn't continue to stay united in their own plans to stay put.
As a result, they moved on and throughout the Earth establishing diverse populations that we have today.
If you go by some of the biblical dating methods you have Noah's Flood about 2350/2450 bc, Tower of Babel about 2240 bc, I've heard from a non-biblical source that the Irish language arrived in Ireland about 2300 bc. These dates I've shared won't necessarily all align b/c they come from different sources but it's an amazing study to work on.
Thanks for the video.
Most irish people know we are not celtic.
Yamnaya lead to Proto-Celts, along with their cousins the Italics, Proto-Germans and Celt Iberians.
So they found a Fir Bolg burial. Interesting.
They were out for a beer but came to soon
The Basques are preceltic.
I am Irish
I got the rare Akhenaten as well as Odin gene through my Northern Irish DNA.

There is a theory that the Celtic languages – Welsh and Irish – have links with Semitic which could point to a Semitic substratum. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAAmwtdP1bE&t=6s
