The Nemesis system patent sparked a lot of discussions. Here’s the real truth behind it all, and even how this could have ruined us as a studio.

  1. I heard a lot of info that was just on impact it could have from other videos. But your video gave me the actual impact and threat level patents have and I definitely learned a lot more from this video then others. Keep up the great work!

  2. You should look into Black and white, and the license trapped stuck between EA, Microsoft and the pieces still floating of whats left of Lionhead Studios. Similar sort of situation, and the reason we dont see some AMAZING games continued to remade in the year of the remakes.

  3. I love the fucking comments here, "almost everyone" commented before they fucking reached the 8 min mark.
No, this fucking patent isn't gonna stop anyone from using this kind of system.
You can't even make a patent for an idea, only 1(or more) implementations of the idea.
Like I can't fucking patent all windmills, but I can patent my design, but that patent won't stop you from designing your own, as long as you don't use my patent in order to design yours!

Yet "almost everyone" here commented with: "Reee this patent will destroy indie devs, reee patents are bad, cause big corporations stop the usage of ideas. reee reee reee angry". It shows that the average viewer attention span of the viewers here is less than 8 min and that their general knowledge on the patent system is severely lacking, showing a likely age group below 18 years old.

Come on guys, grow the fuck up and watch the video.

  4. I very much aoppreciate you guys taking extra time to dig up specific examples, it makes videos like these so much more valuable than "Look at this thing that happened, isn't that wild! See you next time!"

If more time between vids allows for deeper, more meaningful content like this, then take all the time you need!

  5. This honestly the most imformative and clear/explaining vid on the matter that i've watched. I'd honestly had no idea how fucked the legal aspects of gaming can get, i wouldn't mind seeing or hearing more things on the inner working of the gaming industry.

  6. This video was fantastic. Way more nuanced than the mainstream reporting and this effort was very commendable.

The patent system is abused often, unfortunately, but a lot of people don't realize that fosters innovation, not hinders. It is a system to rewards innovation and discourages secrecy.

  7. Fallout 3 and New Vegas have similar mechanics. If you kill Caesar, the NPC around you will make a comment about it. NPC will react differently with your companion. Also, if you wear faction outfit, it will make certain NPC turn friendly or turn hostile. If your Karma is high or low (based on player action) you can recruit certain companions. If you attack a faction, your reputation will change and also the dialogue of the NPC.

  8. Except carbon copies of the Nemesis system DO exist. In mods.
Skyrim and Minecraft both have mods that carbon-copy the Nemesis system.
Of course for actual games there is an obvious way to get around this: have both the factions be technically playable. Then they aren’t “NPCs”.

  9. There is a solution people remember you have to vote with your wallet in order to make it work and in order to do that you have to make sacrifices you have to endure the pain. Don't buy anything from Warner Brothers ever again! If you want to let him know how stupid it was to patent video game stuff this is how you do it make sure everybody knows the story again and again and again let the world know no fuck them they're not allowed to destroy gaming so don't buy their products ever again! That includes movies comic books James music anything they have a hand in boycotted. Remember Gillette they lost 8 billion dollars in the course of a year over their stupidity and though they don't admit it online they're hurting their stockholders were pissed they lost a lot of money! You don't see their man-hating commercials anymore they've gone back to trying to cater to men but it hasn't worked out too well for them most men has said we're done time for Warner Brothers to learn that lesson from the gamers!

  10. Loved the deep dive. Its amazigng to see what kind of scummy practices are happening in the game industry. Not alot of attention is put into the more in depth analysis. I like it 🙂

  11. This was a great video, thanks for putting the extra work into it. Personally I always appreciate when creators do, specifically because so many don't. I've stopped watching multiple gaming news channels because they put in too much opinion, filler, or click baiting. I've seen a few of your videos now and liked them, but this one earned a sub. =)
