  4. The red dragons are indeed evil, but so are the Githyanki that ride them (like your companion). After the Gith overthrew the Mind Flayers that enslaved them they split into 2 factions. The Githzerai pursued enlightenment and peace. The Githyanki copied the Mind Flayers and became raiders and enslavers themselves. They both hate each other but they hate the Mind Flayers more.

    I assume the Githyanki are only being helpful here because they want to kill the Mind Flayers. The moment the Mind Flayers died they would likely turn around and raid the surrounding lands.
