PLEASE NOTE: I want to thank ppl for their patience in my getting this video done, I know a month is a long time – however the script ended up being so long this is actually half the original part-3 – so very soon (hopefully next week) Part 4 will follow – also there will then be a final part 5 video. I know it has been a long time, but getting this series finished and not just abandoning the series was important for me, I hope you guys do enjoy and know that regular scheduled service will be following from here. Thanks all for your continued support.
I keep coming back to this one <3
I've never played 40k, tabletop or otherwise, or owned any bit of 40k media or physical items, and yet I find myself watching all these lore videos with studious fervor.
A testament to the skill of the narrator.
came for warhammer, stayed for the lecture on time.
Have you written anything published?
Amazing video, I hadn't considered the impact of FTL travel on individual people's time. The nature of time itself is a fascinating topic. The flow of time is subject to velocity and even gravity, theoretically there are people still travelling in the Warp that began their journey during the Great Crusade, and they may have only aged a month or two if they were going fast enough, or near enough to Gravity wells.
In addition, any measurement of time they'd use would have little relevance outside of Terra. Hours, days and even years as we currently understand them are entirely based on Earth's solar cycle.
What would 24 hours per day even mean to tidally locked planets like Nostromo? Probably nothing at all.
How quickly do people adapt to different "day" intervals that would be present on different planets? What behaviors would emerge in those environments? What physical changes would happen? All questions that the ideas you put forward raise.
Another thought, Necrons are capable of travelling into the "past" which is significantly more difficult than travelling into the "future" why would Necrons bother staying in the 42nd or 43rd millennium? Why not just keep going forward until everything in the Galaxy is dead? What relevance does time even hold for immortal beings like the Necrons? Theoretically, they're already millions of years old.
What possible gain could they even recieve from sticking around? Why bother with just one galaxy when there's an entire universe out there? Why not just skip forward to the point where every living thing is dead? If they can time travel, why not just let entropy win the war for you? Resources can't be an issue, as the necrons could easily plunder less defended galaxies for all the raw inorganic materiel they need. They aren't reliant on the Warp for travel, which is what keeps everyone else locked in, as the warp doesn't affect things outside of the milky way from what the lore supposedly states.
Every potential answer gives me more questions.
[discussed in part 4] This does not does not even account for differences in planetary masses as time passes more slowly in very heavy planets compared to smaller celestial bodies. Altough it might not affect time as noticeably as FTL travel.
Wherein Leutin contends with the ways that the existence of the Warp makes Special Relativity ultimately meaningless. Who would have thought that being able to break causality would make "reality" a meaningless concept? Oh yeah, every physicist since Einstein.
now i am kinda sorry i didnt get that PhD in physics to understand more lore pepeHands
I love how this "game universe" (its so much deeper then that) inspired you to actually make a very philosophical and educational video series. Well done!
I'm a bit late to the party, but just wanted to say as a physicist I was surprised you got your head around the topics of different progression of time this well as it's very difficult to understand such abstract and alien concepts.
It got a bit lengthy in the middle where you were emphasising a lot, how wrong our intuitional perception of time is, but I guess that can be important if someone gets confronted by this topic for the first time and I you talked about the most important examples/experiments when considering this topic.
As an example of time dilation affecting an interstellar empire and "prolonging" spacefarers lives I can recommend the books of the "Ender's Game" series where Ender is alive thousands of years after his birth despite being only a few decades old, because he travelled so much, which accurately resembles physics as we understand it currently (except all the instant-internet, that was sadly just scifi)
Every satellite and especially GPS satellites has to correct for the time difference caused by the time dilation due to their 12,600 mile high orbit. So the passage of time is not so exotic as u might think, there are other examples that just the most obvious one.
As a physicist I can can without doubt the present is a real and physical phenomenon created out of the quantum state. This is evident most when two particles are entangled. It may be exaggerated by the human brain but it definitely exists as a point of reference. The issue is one of human measurement, constrained by our current understanding of physics not an ambiguity of time itself. Time itself is very simple and follows easily defined rules.
If the Emperor had been successful in the creation of the Imperial Webway then time could have been standardized across the Emperium because webway travel doesn't have the time dilation problem. You climb the mountain because it is there.
I have problems with your conclusions. Lorentz transformations are physical events, meaning they are measurable and consistent.
There is no reason that imperial ships could not have a calculator that modifies ship clocks to meet the constant of terran time.
The reason to do this isnt that terran time is “true” time, but because it gives a constant so that humanity can interact more meaningfully.
The emperor’s light is used as a constant through the warp, so there is a precedent to using terra as a constant in order to allow for easy communication.
What I gathered from this video is. that food delivery services are unreliable and time is confusing in the 40k verse.
It appears 40K is actually set in 2020…
Im a massive eldar fan and i absolutely love this series. And these aspects of the 40kverse are my favorite. It makes me sad to know there wont be any more eldar books to shed light on this stuff
Does anyone have the name of the song at the end?
20 + 20 = 40K(orona)
Coincidence? I think not!
Here’s an interesting way you could handle this. What if everyone always had to clocks or calendars on them and one was for the planet they are closest to and the other was there own set on birth and never leaving there side. Then you would be able to triangulate time by saying I left this planet at its time of * and my time of * and at my arrival at the next planet my time was * meaning in theory I would add the difference between my time and the planets when I left giving me a theoretical understanding that’s still probably wrong of what the present could be at said beginning point of the destination.

Amazing video, yet i missed why all the time talk was relevant for the remainder of the video.. Still big time and amazing amazing lore video
There's probably no real answers but where the hell would something like the C'tan even come from? They don't seem natural at all yet they are not from the warp either it is said they were created at the beginning of the universe but that's not much of a answer.
For the standard-time, I might have a solution. Holy Terra could send a catalog with observed supernovae with known coordinates with timestamps to other planets. Then they pick one they observed themself (mostlikely one that they have the same distance to as Terra had to the nova). Then they have to do a bit math to account for differences in distance and they have a fixpoint to calibrate their chronometer.
Does anyone know the last song with the birth of Slaanesh?
There are 2 things rather interesting to be considered the first part from the book "the Oracle and the divine" and the second from "Cawl the great work".
In the former the beginning of the book had an interesting scene that was described as 'more' than 60 million years ago a female dinosaur gazed into the night sky and saw something with a green glow landing and then annihilating them.
The implication here being that the place was earth and the extinction level that wiped out the dinosaurs, suggesting that it where the necrons who who ravaged the war.
More importantly that it where the old ones who later reseeded earth with life giving eventually birth to humanity .
Indicating ,as the dinos extinction level event happened 65million years ago, that the war in heaven lasted potentially for as long as 5 million years
As in the second book the ascendet Ctan Zahulesh suggested that humanity was of old ones design although far off the intended design path.
What's the important bit?
What if the intended design path the old ones nurtured humanity towards to where the perpetuals?
It makes a certain sense that the old ones ,who where fighting a enemy that was essentially immortal as every necron "killed" was in reality capable of being resorted to full operation, would try to counter that tit for tat, in that they would create species who too where immortal and could resurrect themselves on demand in the field.
And as they where fond of using psychic powers as weapons of war against the ctan and necrons, having their bioweapons essentially psychic powers makes also sense.
Giving one sensible explanation of where the emperor came from as he might be an accidental occurence of what humanity as one of the old ones bioweapons species was intended to be overall.
Further that the eldar lost their true psychic potential and their perpetual state might have been, like with the krorks intellect, a fail safe installed into their most powerfull species in case the old ones went extinct as they probably didn't truly trust them with such power.
I could listen to you for hours man. I know so much about 40k because of you and I don't even play it lol
some physics as a little snack? hell yeah
You come here to fulfil your addiction to W40k stuff and gain also a very deep and thoughtful philosophical view of the very concept of time and our relation to such illusion
so amazing
in fact, i used to think that the imperial population wore a watch with two movements on their wrist. One for local / planetary time and one for terra time.
In space, of course, terra time applies.
Well it's 40K. My explanation was too simple for the universe.
good content keep it up
So, where does Bretonnia fit into all this? We sorted those Tomb Kings out alight, I cant imagine these newfangled Necrons would stand up against a good old cavalry charge from a good Couronne bread warhorse! Got elvish blood in em they do!
Very nice work here!
Unfortunately it gets disrupted by the malevolent BS YouTube is pulling these days. I usually support Creators via not skipping adverts, but a 69:32 ad??? 70 Minutes????? Displayed twice in the same video? Sorry but no way in hell I won’t skip that!
Ain’t nobody got time for that crap!
The book Hyperion has a great example of this time dialation effect. A worker on a lightspeed jumper is part of a team that flies materials to and from a colony world. He has a relationship with a girl on this world but has to leave her for another run. He does this repeatedly and each time he returns the woman is 15 years older even though only a couple of weeks have passed for him.
Oooo my head hurts !!
10:50 space-time-energy 5D! Broh
For me "Present" is a fragment of time (or space-time) experienced by the Observer in real time. It cannot be documented because the moment you write it down it becomes the past. Also it is specific to the observer, taking Einsteins theory o relativity even a little difference of speed and mass can change change the way "present" is expirienced. "Present" is different for Me masturbating to this vid, and to another guy masturbating to some cheap porn on a plane.
Speaking of the relativity of time, a presumably common definition of the diameter of the Milky Way galaxy I retrieved from Wikipedia places it at 105,700 light years. This is well short enough for some goings-on during the height of the Eldar Empire and the Age of Technology to be witnessed by astronomers not much more than a 10th of the way across the galaxy–if only the ones that released truly gargantuan amounts of energy at the speed of light, which we know both species were very capable of at one point. Why is this not exploited in-universe in anything I've ever heard about?
Yes Inquisitor, 3:28 this time stamp right here
Ah yes describing a fundamental fact of existence.
great fun.
Side note if you were to make quantum intangled clocks for every single world in the imperium and you were to get them there without the warp you would have an "average time" due to every clock experiencing the same events as each other perfectly simultaneously with each other.
When next to a normal clock they would seem to be odd due to the unique differences on each planet either moving faster or slower then the normal clock.
Forgot to leave a like so came back and left a comment as well, good job as always mate, appreciate it!
This all started with grown men playing with little plastic dolls. It's actually kind of beautiful.
One correction: For similar relativity reasons, a geocentric model of the Universe is in a sense no less correct than a heliocentric one–as long as you adjust literally everything to compensate; for instance, unlike classic geocentric models, the motions of the entire rest of the universe would be far from near-perfect ellipses. Physics has no preference for inertial frame of reference. You could define any point in the Universe as stationary and at a fundamental level everything would still work the same, albeit with the math changing into something probably highly unintuitive. We simply choose to interpret it as objects orbiting the sun because that's easier for our brains to understand.
2020 has been a blur because this planet has massive and i mean MASSIVE amounts of Heretics. Nurgle's blight has affected this world. I suggest exterminatus Lord Inquisitor!
pedantic drivel. these real concepts need more pragmatic anchoring and less subjectivist hyperbole
It's hard to imagine an integral block universe perception, but since we can always project dimensions into one less dimension, try this exercise: the immaterium is a building with 100 floors. Time in the materium runs up from first to last floor, and from each window beings from the immaterium can jump out. Slaanesh never goes to the first floors, and thus never interacts with the materium before her "birth". To the other gods she has always existed, and yet her presence "begins" on the Nth floor. Hope it helps.
Hey, Luetin09, listen. NEVER apologize for talking about physics.
