1996: Gaming's Best Year… Maybe

I accidentally set this as 1900×1200 and didn’t even notice. Huzzah!

1996 wasn’t very long ago, except it was 25 years ago oh no. It was also, looking back at things, potentially the best year ever for video games. Resident Evil, the N64, Mario 64, Tekken 2 – the list goes on.

Here’s my look at the highlights of the year, as well as some other bits that aren’t quite as great but are worth mentioning.

  1. To this day, Terranigma remains underrated. Even though it did little new on the surface, it is a magnum opus in story telling, immersion, atmosphere, and the soundtrack should've won awards. 🙂

  2. Interesting take. Usually 96 doesn't come up that much, when talking about the GOAT Year.

    Other great games from 1996:

Battle Garegga – One of the greatest shooters (shmups)
Metal Slug – Better than Contra (Fight me!)
NBA Hangtime – Basically NBA Jam Perfected
Neo Turf Masters – The greatest golf game ever
Tetris Attack – Addicting and adorable game

  3. 100% agree that 1996 is the best year in gaming. I have always said that if (for some really weird reason) I was only allowed to pick one year's new releases to be allowed to play, it would be it. Nights and Mario 64 are my top 2 favourite games ever but SO many other stone cold classics I still replay to this day came out here too.

  4. Can't wait to see a fawning video about how valve changed the fabric of spacetime forever by doing what no one else could ever achieve in the medium of video games or whatever.

  5. 100% with you on the DD2 physics bit. Spent hours doing exactly the same thing on that track. Loved that game and never really knew why (I loved it that much), until now. Great vid again!

  6. Great video, I remember getting the N 64, good memories, I played GoldenEye a lot, I also really liked that Die hard trilogy on the PS1. I also had alien vs predator on the Atari Jaguar, I really liked that, just as well as I only had 2 games on that console. I would have appreciated X box game pass a lot more back then, I've got to much to play now. 😆✌️

  7. Great take on 1996! Although I religiously worship 1998, 1996 made it all possible and was indeed a great year for all of us SNES, PSX, Saturn, PC fans. Even the 3DO had its best games released in 1996. Banzai!
