Cyberpunk 2077: A Fair And Balanced Review – Style Over Substance?

Is Cyberpunk 2077 the WORST GAME EVER? Or is it BIGGER THAN JESUS? Despite the loud, often extreme opinions and reviews, the truth is somewhere in the middle – let’s take a more measured, fair and balanced look at CD Projekt Red’s open-world RPG, one of the most hyped video games of the last decade, and work out just how much “Style over Substance” Cyberpunk actually has.

MILD SPOILER WARNING: All footage and discussion avoids spoilers where possible, but there are a couple of points which discuss the story in very vague terms, so check the timestamps below to skip these, if you wish to remain completely spoiler-free, for when you do maybe play it. Eventually. When it’s fixed. In 2077…

  1. Well the video did exactly what it said on the title, congrats! Having played it for about 150hrs so far on base PS4 (enjoying it, for the most part), I agree with all the good & bads mentioned. The worrying part for me in terms of the game improving with time: Patch 1.1 broke the game for me! I started playing it in 1.06 and it was a little bit buggy, some crashes here and there (learned to live with it – save every 2mins, ugh!) but overall a good experience. After 1.1 for me it has become a buggy mess (of the game-breaking variety), seems like what people were describing v.1.00 was. Experience now quite unpleasant! I hope it was just an 'unlucky' patch and they manage to get it right at sooome point in the future. Too much unfillfilled potential, yet it still was a pretty exhilarating playthrough for me under 1.06.

  2. I really like the game. Yeah, it's broke as fuck and it should've been worked on for at least another year… But I still really dug it. I love the pen & paper cyberpunk games so it might help that I was already invested in the world, and even through my rise tinted glasses I could still see the glaring problems barely hidden beneath the surface. But I did really enjoy it.

Also the soundtrack and score are absolutely banging.

  3. I love winding my brother up. He was claiming for years this would be the most in-depth, advanced AI, best game of the generation blah blah. Pissing about I kept saying it'll be the most expensive 7/10 ever made. I was only joking, as I'm a massive 80's-90's Cyberpunk fan so of course I'd be happy for it to be good, but I wasn't that far wrong.

And also whilst I'm on the subject, there's an ongoing dispute with me and my brother. He claims that all games these days range from 6/10 – 10/10 and anything below is considered a 0, with games that get a 3 – 5 being reserved for "games that launch broken". And me? I'm an old fart so I use the whole scale like the magazines used to, my train of thought is "if its a 4-6/10… It's because some people got it and rated it a 10, and some people didn't and gave it a 0 or 1" which works for some of my favourite games/movies of all time.

  4. People talk about next gen games being the best thing since pizza but really they are only a slight important.
2077 is a PS4/XBoxOne game and only just a little bit better than GTA5 but the deves jammed to much into it to make it PS5/XBoxX game

  5. i may eventually play this ps4 version on my ps5, but i may also wait for the ps5 next gen version with dlc expansions before i play.

Witcher 3 launched better yes, but it still had many issues as well and now look at it

  7. I had a blast with this game. 64 hours for my first play through on PC. I7 6800 k and GTX 1070. Not a single crash. (I waited until after Christmas to start and hotfix 1.6) I did have annoying tree pop ins everywhere until I updated NVIDIA drivers, then they went away. I really want to play through again with a different background, but I’m waiting until I can score an RTX 3080 and play with ray tracing on. The game is good, but should not have been released on last gen consoles. They should get the team that did the Switch version of Witcher 3 to rework this for consoles. If they could get W3 to run on a potato, I’m sure they could get CP2077 to run on a 2013 Console.

  8. Cyberpunk 2077 isn't a bad game It stared of good and then just found it got slow and boring. Only played almost to the end of the meeting with Evelyn Parker and Judy Alvarez at Lizzie's Bar. May revisit again in the future. Just not right now.
