Oblivion | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 141

The deed is done: Microsoft has officially purchased Bethesda. What’s that mean for PlayStation gamers? Well, it doesn’t seem good, at least if you care about many of that label’s products coming to PlayStation 5 outside of Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo. But between the lines are still myriad topics ripe for discussion, like Phil Spencer’s years-long lack of categorical, definitive statements, Microsoft’s seeming inability to manage the studios they already own, and what PlayStation may look like without the likes of Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Doom, Wolfenstein, and more. So let’s jump deep into the topic at hand, shall we? Plus: PS5’s sales are historically high in the United States, TMNT is redefining the definition of Turtle Power, NCAA Football’s return may be further away than you think, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Why is Square Enix so hesitant to re-release their NES and SNES-era Final Fantasy games? Does the ‘end’ of Japan Studio have any sort of effect on Fumito Ueda? Where are all of the detective games? Did Colin give Chris a PSVR unit in the past so that Chris can give it back to him in the future?

  1. I'm a PC gamer and don't even own a console well the GF has a switch but Sony is a smart company they should of realized hey we push Mircosoft into a corner and force them to be competitive and keep pushing this exclusive narrative Sony only has themselves to blame for their customer base possibly missing out on games like these

  2. I just realised Colin thinks PS5 games shouldn't go to PS4 despite it's massive install base (because he want's PS5 exclusives), but he does think that Xbox Bethesda games should go to PS5 because of the install base (which has reset anyway). I wonder what he would say to that if some one asked him.

Colin is usually spot on when it comes to coverage but with Xbox he has a massive blind spot.

  3. 1:02:09 I was walking up the staircase to my house and the SECOND you said the word "paid" I was looking directly at a red sticker that was stuck to one of my steps that said the word "PAID"

Whats are the mathematical odds of this happening? Think about all the variables that could have made this NOT happen

  4. You don't care about 8 studios' games and IP?! Well, you're in the vast minority. The "I don't care about Bethesda" attidge is old.

And, Phil Spencer's comments were very clear. Legacy titles aren't legacy IP's.

  5. I really don’t care about anything Microsoft does with Bethesda except letting Obsidian write another Fallout game.
That’s all it takes to make the acquisition a success to me.

  6. 39:05 Really just my opinion but I just can’t believe how much my opinion differs on Rachet & clank 2018 from Colins. Apart from the graphics and animations I think R&C is so much worse of a game than the original. From the new script, narrative, ost, character and different enemy placement etc. It really feels like they just disneyfied the whole game to appeal to a broader audience and sell movie tickets and plushie toys. The characters has no depth or character development anymore, the jokes are just horrible(very subjective, but come on. No one stfu in this game) the orchestral soundtrack feels super generic and not memorable at all. It just feels like all the passion from the first game is striped out and what’s left is a very safe formulaic product in the end.

  7. The scarcity of PS5 absolutely is unprecedented, the Wii was an outlier. A slow down in manufacturing due to a global pandemic + a worldwide silicone shortage + a rampant increase in scalping consoles and video cards. It wouldn't have been this difficult to buy a PS5 under normal conditions.

  8. The games Xbox is gonna go "hunt" with in terms in showing people how much cheaper it is to game on their platform is likely with 3rd party titles. Like, just today they announced Outriders will be included in game pass on release day.

  9. 2:03:33 Mark had me screaming (softly at work) through my phone that Final Fantasy 1, 2, 3, 4 (W/After Years), and Tactics were "Remastered" on a "recent" Playstation. The PSP. If SE wanted to be lazy, they could ask Sony for that PSP emulator they used for Parappa and other PSP to PS4 ports and then release their PSP titles. Still love and play my Playstation Handhelds to this day.

  10. I'm an xbox fan, but yeah I don't particularly like the gloating going on at the moment. Just creates a nastiness in the community.

Plus, why people berate commentators being wrong when its literally impossible to not be wrong at some point, I dunno, just seems petty.

Just enjoy your games, and accept the fact the industry is a business, and sometimes it doesn't always pan out. Like many xbox one owners know, its great things are better for series x/s, but yeah doesn't mean you need to be an arse all of a sudden.

    Stay classy peeps!

  11. The Tomb Raider Xbox “exclusive” situation really does remind me a LOT of how GamePass is being talked about in terms of exclusivity. I think they’re waiting to see just how successful this deal is at growing their subscriber numbers.

  12. The Xbox fanboys who don’t play the elder scrolls or Fallout need to understand that Bethesda got a pass with Fallout 4 because of the hype of Skyrim. Fallout 4 wasn’t as well received and 76 burned a lot of good will. The next Elder Scrolls has to be nothing less then perfect.

  13. As an Xbox owner, I think Sony will be fine. This acquisition will not be the end of Sony's success! As a gamer, I want a reason to get every console and now each of the big three have big exclusive lineups.

  14. Lmao. He didn't say legacy ips. He said legacy titles. They aren't gonna pull games like fallout 4 from the stores they exist on. They aren't gonna put new games on ps. "Anywhere where gp exists". Outside of deathloop and ghostwire. Ps gets nothing but eso and fo76. They bought a publisher that has so much content it has its own e3 show.

  15. Consolation is never good. That being said, I’m sorry Collin but Sony fans are just as bad if not much worse. But I do agree about Tencent.

I love my PS5 but some folks are just plain crazy.

  16. Does last stand media have like a “gamescast” type of podcast where all of them just talk about games in general? Not specific to any console. I left kinda funny with Colin. I enjoyed what he brought to the table the most but I’m not a PlayStation gamer per say. I listen to Defining Duke and Sacred Symbols but I thing they should mash it once in a while

  17. Gamepass is on Console, PC, and Smart Phones. If Gamepass spreads to Switch or PS5 then they'll have access as well otherwise these future games will only be on platforms that currently have Gamepass.

  18. You know Colin, I bet you'll care about Bethesda real soon. I don't want to insult you and I know you're not trying to be a dick, I've follow you for awhile now, but that "I didn't like Prey, Fallout, etc." shit is a bit childish, like "I'm not impressed". Dude I didn't care about Gorilla Games before Horizon, or Sucker Punch before GOT, but I didn't need to say it, I was just expectant, and later happy because great games came out. Also it's important to note that Bethesda is way more than their decade-old Skyrim and F76. They own impressive tech and talent.

On the Gamepass commentary, I'm sorry to disagree, but Xbox is not looking at PS and Switch like those two look at Xbox. There's way more people who own mobile devices and Smart TVs than those who own a PS, by a huge difference.

  19. I want to be completely forthright, that Capcom, Square-Enix, and Sega should remain independent companies and an acquisition of them by any entity would be bad for all of gaming. Sony helping fund Final Fantasy 16 is different than taking the entire company off the table for other platforms, especially when FF has a heritage on PS1.

  20. I disagree at least Microsoft now owns the studios they are financially supporting them now if they want to make them exclusive thats their prerogative on the Sony side they are just throwing a bunch of money at Square to not put these games on another platform

  21. "Where Game Pass Exists" means if Sony wants Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, etc… then they must have Game Pass on Playstation. Your inability to see what's right in front of you is astounding.

  22. Bugthesda games will be exclusive. Why PlayStation fans care, is beyond me. This is just list wars. Most of you guys going crazy about this haven't been purchasing their shit.

Dishonored 2 flopped, Evil Within 2 flopped, Prey flopped, Rage 2 flopped, Wolfenstein flopped, Fallou 76 flopped, BGS is ass these days.

  23. Colin just has a really poor understanding of modern business and streaming platforms. Unable to see the forest through the trees. He can't help but see things in some antiquated way. Microsoft isn't propping up gamepass to compete with Sony. Microsoft isn't trying to win a war with them. Microsoft is thinking in Horizon 2's and 3's. Decades from now. What does a trillion dollar company care if it loses a few million in a long term play that will bring in billions? They're not looking to "make back money ", that's not how a trillion dollar corporation thinks. They have so much money that constant investments are smart.

I don't normally listen to Colin's content anymore but it's clear business isn't what he thought it would be. He had a unique corner by integrating history and politics but it wasn't profitable. He had no ads and only patreon funding but now there are ads. I'm not sure you are in a position to lecture trillion dollar corporations on what to do with their content. Trading Deathloop for Starfield considerations? Why would Microsoft ever do that? Every Xbox fan knows its coming to Xbox a year later on gamepass. Deathloop looks great but it won't sell gamepass like Starfield will. You only have a Sony lens of seeing gaming which is why you missed the mark so bad. Microsoft and Sony are nothing alike aside from making consoles. Microsoft doesn't care about a $70 box sale on playstation when a gamepass subscription is worth multitudes more.

  24. The difference between Netflix and Game Pass is that a decent bunch of games have micro-transactions/DLC, movies don’t. Netflix may have struggled at the start when they were trying to build their customer base, but I don’t think GamePass is suffering the same magnitude of investment loss.

  25. The one thing I don't understand is when Colin always says" I'm not really pro playstation, people who listen to me know this". Colin, I've listened to you since the beyond days. You've hosted 3 different playstation podcasts now. You definitely have an affinity for playstation. Some might even say a bias, and that's fine. You are best know for covering playstation, so I think people expect and assume you have at least SOME bias towards them. I don't know why you feel you have to keep saying you aren't.

Colin, would you rather he said PC, Xbox, android and soon iOS, Samsung TVs and other contracts in the works or just say where Gamepass exists.

  27. The truth of it all is Xbox fans voiced that they were tired of the NO GAMES narrative. MS didn’t want to loose more of their player base so they went and got them exclusive games. The end.
