The recent announcement of the Minecraft cave update adds a new mob of big, horned monsters. Design wise, they are pretty scary but how do they change the lore? Dream might have a point about the golem and warden being related I mean the golem is the “warden” of thr village protecting the villagers fron invaders, just like the warden and the stronghold
Maybe wardens used to be like iron golems in the overworld, but overtime as iron became easier to obtain for the builders, the wardens stopped being used and replaced with just iron golems. Sculk could be a collection of souls from the miners who died in the cave. Wardens eventually found themselves at the very bottom of caves and were possessed by the souls in the sculk.

Actually in a recent video of minecraft title "Ask Mojang: All about caves & cliffs update" it said that the worden isn't really protecting anything, its more like a challenge (min: 21:00)

Here's an idea,
The wardens were a type of golem, built from would sand, specifically constructed in strongholds when the builders escaped to the end.
After a while, the wardens wandered off into caves in chase of a mob
The wardens come across sculk and can't make their way back, most likely due to going too deep. The sculk, over time, takes over the warden and the souls in its chest are those of the soul sand.
