Warhammer Quest Cursed City has Vanished | This Game is Cursed | News Update | No Reprint Confirmed

Always Board Never Boring has spent a while hunting down various sources of information regarding the cursed release of Warhammer Quest Cursed City. In this video, he discusses why the game isn’t available, why it’s been removed from the webstore, and why Games Workshop are saying there won’t be a reprint. It sounds like bad news all round. For now, at least.

  1. The novel hints at potential expansions as well… NOVEL SPOILERS: Khorne cultists for sure and some threats from the forest and from the ruins which Radukar says he is guarding the city against.

  2. "People cant buy it" sure but a lot of us actually did go ahead and buy it. We don't know the numbers but safe to say they made a fair amount of copies even though they sold out quickly. So a bunch of us with our games are still looking for content..

  3. This is reminding me of back when 40K 6th ed came out. And GW stopped even trying to make a game, they just released incrementally more expensive models to see how much cash they could squeeze out of the fans.

And just like then, they need to be reminded that we have other companies that we can give out money to. They aren't the only game in town, and they seem to have forgotten that.

Personally, I have no intention of buying any Warhammer Quest products or box sets of anything for the foreseeable future, and intend to minimize what purchases I do make from them.

  4. The Cursed City pages are still up. Since it's a legacy type game, they will at least produce additional content and expansions.
Since China and the ports are clogged anyway, they may reprint it next year. Having no plans now says nothing about the future.

  5. This makes no sense. Some fans don't seem to differentiate between products to understand why GW does certain things with different products, but this is a stand-alone game really disconnected from any battle game by a substantial degree. The only way to get ROI for it is to sell it for the long term. I know people are claiming Brexit and manufacturing issues could do some voodoo to this, but none of it is more than amateur speculation. As to economy of scale, am I to believe Chinese manufacturers decided they wouldn't make as much as GW wanted, and then since they apparently had their credit card, decided to charge GW more for what little they did produce? That's nonsense. Printing services are available in just about every major country in the world, by the way, if it's a real issue. Tariffs take off a few percent of the price of this game which saw a 33% increase in cost, there's no way that's making it unprofitable. People are making ridiculous claims about warehousing costs and how afraid GW are about not selling out of a product, all of which only proves they have probably never taken a step inside a warehouse or ever so much as rented out a storage locker, because that's all nonsense.

GW doesn't even have some crazed single business owner at the top, some George Steinbrenner like figure who might make irrational decisions on a whim. It's all a bunch of MBAs who make decisions by committee only. I have yet to hear any explanation grounded in reality, by anyone who sounds like they have any experience in sales or manufacturing.

  6. That is a shame, I hope some good news comes. I'm looking into how to preserve the cardboard tiles. I know it's not the same as owning the game but to be-able to share the experience of this game with others.

  7. I think this explains why CC didn't show up in White Dwarf. They have known for a while that this product line was dead. They promote the release to sell existing inventory but now it's scrubbed from existence. I bet you never see another CC-branded Warhammer video or White Dwarf article.

What a weird and unfortunate blip in the history of GW games. Thanks, all you people who voted for Brexit. Thanks for killing this game line.

  8. It was pretty common knowledge that this was believed to be a permanent product, it's odd they didn't correct anyone if they knew that wasn't the case ahead of time.

This is so much of a severe U-turn that it must be some sort of weird legal matter. Maybe they need to change the product somehow before they can rerelease it?

They still have a couple of copies in my local store, if I was of that frame of mind I'd be tempted to buy them and flip them on eBay.

  9. Thanks for the heads up on this.

I’d held off on picking this up, after missing out on the initial release, based on the info suggesting it’d be restocked.

Knowing this might not be the case I’ve just picked up a copy.
£35 over the original RRP, but not the ridiculous mark up it was originally attracting.

  10. The thing is, Warhammer Community team are entwined with GW's Marketing Dept and they can't really put out a release saying they'd done and oopsie and this product that they'd planned to support for a few years is now in the bin due to profitability concerns, (Customers aren't going to be very understanding about that!) so Community are now in the uncomfortable position of having to walk back any statement that gave the impression CC was going anything other than a limited release. Conceivably they could still release planned expansions, but you generally don't do that after you've discontinued the core game itself.

  11. I feel like this is just GW manufacturing FOMO by hyping up the game and getting people scrambling over scraps just to make a scene. Almost every box set like this in the past few years has had this "limited run" BS going on and I'm sick of it. Games Workshop charges so much money for their products and can easily afford to keep popular items in stock for a long time, they just rely on fake scarcity for marketing purposes and it is such a slimy business practice, really making me angry seeing GW do this again and again.

  12. Lets put this out clear since so many seem to have missed the true situation out there:
    Its called Corona-Sars-2.

And based on the hysteria in my country, it is not suprising me that GW cannot do as they wish they could.
Also if they had infections among their staff, its not likely to get spilled, because of the hysterical backlash it will create. (not to mention that all GW shops in my country are forced closed at the moment by the government!)

Also I doubt that China is as stupid as the EU and screw up on a financial worthy income from the UK.
So the Tax from and to China are not the same as to the EU, which has changed thanks to ignorance and selfishness of the EU.

I dont think Cursed City will not come back, since it is promoted to get expansions (and some models are already confirmed to be from Ulfenkarn like the rat prince and Lady Annika)
Maybe the other versions will be packed in a different box (something more "supermarket" friendly like Hero Quest etc was in the past)

This is not the moment to panic.
Even piety and pain went back up again for order. (and that also had the delay email attached to it, turning its possible deliverytime from possible 4 weeks into possible 4 weeks or less)

  13. From what I have read it has to do with the fact it is made outside of the UK and then shipped from the UK outside thereby taxing it into a non-profitable (or not enough profit for them) scenario due to the new laws that came into effect JAN 2021.

  14. I wandered in to my local shop to buy paint and found that the game and book were both there so bought them…. I was a little shocked to say the least. I did pick up a cheap copy without figures for a friends birthday as he will use his oldhammer figures. It would be a shame if the game is not continued! Your comments regarding the economic reasons are very interesting.

  15. For me the big issue is all the time I wasted reading community posts in the build up and the hour long twitch stream before the cursed city released. They come across as having zero respect for there customer's. As long as we keep spending our money on there products. They have zero competition so they can do what they want. This happens on every good release but yet they keep doing the same thing over and over.

  16. Really strange… I'm happy to have my copy, but I rally wished the game would be played by a lot of people and bring them to the hobby.
I'm hoping you will make more videos about CC despite it's unavailable – one can't simply buy a HeroQuest or Starqest neither – and I think it's informative and great content anyway.

  17. 150,-€ and the earnings from customers/fans are not worth it unless it's produced in china at a 80% margin?

    If they just announced that:
"through Brexit new production and trading chains have to be created and its uncirtain how fast this can be achieved."
    everybody would have understood.
But no they had to choose the "
fuck off we changed our mind, don't need your money and care about your satisfaction. Maybe your lucky next time" option.
🤦‍♂️What is wrong with this world?

  18. It was nice whilst it lasted. I find the lore and setting interesting. Have mixed feelings about not picking it up. But if the expansions are not being released and the game is not going to be re-released I feel like I have dodged a bullet. Thank you for the update.

  19. I highly doubt it was not profitable. Maybe the margin was reduced to a level they did not like so they need to hold it back so they can do a price increase on it. They have been plastic production limited recently so likely would want to use the limited capacity for higher margin items.

  20. ouch I really hope the GW twitter account has no clue as that would mean no expansions as well, but alas it really looks like it's the real thing as of now. I thought BSF was a fantastic release both game and lorewise and had some amazing miniatures and cursed city just looked so much like the same thing for the fantasy setting. I think everybody was really expecting expansions and support (WD etc) for this game. Fingers crossed for re-release.

  21. Here in North America a lot of stores never got copies of the box set to fill pre orders never mind to stock shelves.

Between Primaris role out leaving me feeling cold and now this and other delays might be time to look at a new game system.

  22. I did have the money for it, but the gameplay video they released turned me off so bad, the gameplay looks so old and clunky, so I'm glad I didn't bother, especially knowing how this has all turned out, glad I pledged for mythic battles ragnarok instead.

  23. Typical GW. A planned for, short supply release to sell out fast. They do it every few years. The next box sets will cost more (for less) but have everyone buying because of GWs continual fomo sales tactics.

  24. I passed on this and bought the new Bloodborne board game. Great minis, great gameplay and less that half the price of Cursed City.
You had my money GW, but you lost it with this disastrous launch.

  25. Wow, I'm not angry just disappointed 😥, i just don't understand all the GW promotions (website, painting tutorials, book ) for them to pull the plug on it, you'd have thought it would make good business sense to reprint at some point. I wonder how many copies they did actually make/ sell.

  26. You raise a good point that this creates an awkward situation for youtube content creators. Will Cursed City videos get views if generally no one has it and it's a niche product?

  27. Well, after a few years of the “new” GW coming back for the gamers, it seems we’ve peaked and they are on the downhill slide once again. Speak with your wallets folks. It’s a publicly traded company, if you don’t buy, they will start to get their sh&$ together once again. As much as I wanted this release and the novel, I missed both and it doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. I’m sure I’ll find a copy of the novel down the line at a reasonable price or collecting dust at some obscure shop somewhere.

  28. Ugh. I don't understand how a company can publicly conflict itself, on the rollout of its own product, hear the dismay of their many clients, and remain silent about it all. Maybe becoming a new GW customer was simply a big mistake. That's what they're currently telling me. I guess I wait to see if there's any future for this product. If they're dumping it and moving on, then instead of new customer buy expansions, paints and GW products… instead they'll have created a voice to recommend people never buy from GW, a duplicitious hype machine… that's a big swing from a new customer, to a vocal advocate that people never give them their money. All it takes is one clarifying message about the future of this product… and silence.

  29. this is insane. I had a second copy that I guess I'll sit on. There are DEFINITELY tons of physical stores with multiple copies but its crazy how botched the communication is for this release.
