Thousands of pro-Donald Trump demonstrators broke through police lines and barricades to storm the Capitol, where politicians were debating the formal ratification of Joe Biden’s election win.
Police say the US Capitol building is now secure, after Trump supporters stormed inside. Police used tear gas and stun grenades to clear protesters. Multiple officers have been injured.
Donald Trump called on his supporters via a recorded message on Twitter to go home and end the siege, minutes after Joe Biden called for calm and for Trump to tell his supporters to stand down.
