Why Mortal Kombat (1995) is STILL the Best Video Game Film | Video Essay

With the imminent release of the new #MortalKombat film, it’s time to look back at a klassic… the original 1995 Mortal Kombat, directed by that purveyor of inane insane video game adaptations, Paul WS Anderson.

Why is it that in over 30 years of video game adaptations put to the big screen, that filmmakers can almost never get it right? Why is it that films like Street Fighter or Super Mario Brothers fail so miserably? Why is it that gems like Detective Pikachu are so rare. But most importantly, Why is Mortal Kombat (1995) STILL the best video game film?

I take a look at some of the keys to a successful #VideoGameMovie adaptation; what filmmakers need to do in order to appease die hard fans and still make an acceptable film. These four simple rules can make or break an adaptation, and yet so few filmmakers address them. This is why Mortal Kombat ’95 will forever be a classic, as it is one of the only video game movies to successfully incorporate these keys.

Sure… the special effects are dated… Sure… there’s some mid-nineties misogyny… and sure… it’s soundtrack is pure 90s techno… but I say without a trace of irony that Mortal Kombat ’95 is STILL the BEST video game film.

  1. Who's looking forward to #MortalKombat (coming VERY soon) But more importantly, where are my '90s' kids? I LOVED the original Mortal Kombat movie in 1995, and it is a hill that I'm willing to die on when I say it's STILL the BEST video game movie out there. Who's with me?
