The third Sunday of Advent is known as “Gaudete” Sunday, from the Latin word for “rejoice.” It is customarily a lightening of the somewhat somber tone of the season that is characterized by a focus on self-examination and repentance as we await the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The emphasis of this day is JOY as we anticipate Christ’s coming at Christmas. It is symbolized by lighting the rose candle in the Advent wreath, and the Celebrant of the Mass wearing rose-colored vestments. Rejoice! Your Savior is coming!
