We talk to Team Asobi’s Nicolas Doucet about how Astro’s Playroom started out as a collection of tech demos for the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller, and evolved into a celebration of PlayStation’s history.

(The book shown in b-roll is PlayStation Anthology by Mathieu Manent.)

  1. This is our first documentary since our call for more Patrons last month and the response has been incredible. Our increased funding allowed us to invest in a new 4k camera, 4k capture gear and new hardware for rendering. We've also been able to provide more work for the rest of the team which has meant more documentaries are in production. We have an hour long doc on Dishonored coming, along with a feature on the design of Loop Hero and plenty more. Exciting times ahead. Thank you all so much for believing in us. https://www.patreon.com/noclip

  2. i unfortunately still haven't gotten my hands on a PS5, but I'm eager to, if for no other reason than the fact that ASTROBOT: Rescue Mission VR was one of the single greatest, most joyful gaming experiences that i've ever had; and i've been gaming for over 40 years. Kudos to Team Asobi. re-spect.

  3. Wow, I have to say it would have been really easy in these COVID docs to just use the webcam footage as-is and leave it alone. But the amount of creativity on display with placing devs into the environments of their games really adds to the production value of the doc, great work as always!

  4. So, basically; Astro's Playroom is LittleBigPlanet remade.
Don't get me wrong, I like it and it has all the right to exist (and it's not the same game, as well as a demo). But LBP was already doing the references with cutesy characters and such.

  5. 16:53 – I agree. – Even though I might have been playing videogames since the early '90s and I've done some complex things with controllers like the Belkin SpeedPad (a.k.a. Razer Tartarus these days), with layering complex keyboard-layouts under one hand and all kinds of macros and such, I don't like when they just throw some kind of scheme at me when it comes to gamepads. – It's like "Oh my god!…" and you get discouraged to even continue because sometimes you can't just remember all of that right away. – And yea, you can learn as you go, but it's better to streamline and optimize controls, at least making them intuitive. – This is actually why I like the SpeedPad, as I can just program it to how I want to input things. – Everything needs to be thought out well.

  6. Astro's Playroom is the most heartwarming game i've ever played, it displays passion, love and care from their developers for the Playstation family like nothing ever has, it surely was a surprise from current Sony top leadership abandonment of those ideals this days.

  7. That T-rex boss was exactly that. a love letter. I was lucky enough to get a PS5 at launch and play astro bot without any spoilers. I loved every minute of it, despite thinking I wouldnt care for it that much. The T-rex boss brought on a flood of childhood memories that were so wonderful to feel. I could still remember playing that demo in awe as I pressed buttons to open the jaw and 'mood walk' the t-rex across the screen. I want to thatnk the developer of astros playroom for making me feel that way, and many other ways. what you made was very special.

  8. I sincerely hope they turn Astro's Playroom into a flagship series that rivals Nintendos Super Mario 3D games. Imagine a Astro Bot game with the length and diversity of a Super Mario Odyssey…

  9. It’s always amazing to see people so excited about their work. But it also makes clear how much Sony’s corporate leadership sucks right now, this video should have been made by themselves. I dont get this faceless, characterless and none personal “relationship” to their customers…

  10. Dual Sense reminds me a lot on what Nintendo was doing with their own hardware, the wii, wii U and DS screens but third-party developers just really never utilized the tech, or at least as much as Nintendo did. I kind of expect that to happen with the dual sense. But honestly, Astro’s Playroom is probably the software I’d want to get the PS5 for. It’s pretty cool seeing those old consoles and pushing the emersion through that controller really does seem cool.
