A happily married couple (Marsha Mason and John Beck) find their lives thrown into frightening disruption when a stranger (Anthony Hopkins) appears at their door claiming that their adopted 12-year-old daughter (Susan Swift) contains the reincarnated spirit of his little girl. Although their daughter has been acting a little strange of late, they dismiss Hopkins as a crackpot. Then “things” start happening, and Hopkins keeps reappearing as a menacing figure, which has a deepening influence on the girl and an increasingly terrifying effect on the family. This haunting, psychological horror film was directed by a master of the genre: Robert Wise (THE HAUNTING).

  1. Some reincarnations happen this way. I’ve met people who’ve told me they’d have repeated nightmares that are exactly the same over and over..Just recently this guy told me he’d have this same dream of a car coming right at him and then he’d wake up from the dream/nightmare..I told him it was his he’d died in a past life..He said he thought the same.

  2. Shurely they could have found a better actress to play the little girl. The scene near the beginning where she is dreaming and whimpering in her sleep simply PATHETIC piece of acting!!!!

  3. Reincarnation makes absolutely zero sense. If it were true no one would be an individual just a conglomeration of previous existances. I don't care if 50 cazillion people believe in it it makes no sense. I am who I am and I am individually and truly unique. For better amd for worse I am me and I am individually unique in both body and soul. Yes my soul will live on but it will not return to earth because it had it's time here when I was alive. What I did while alive defined who I am for better or worse. There are no retries!!!! What transpires counts oh does it count!!!! Life is not a test run!! It's for real and completely serious!!!! It counts oh does it count. So wake up people for it is appointed once for man to die and after this the judgement. (Not the next try)??? Come on do you actually believe that someone who raped and murdered an innocent child should deserve another chance, what if they again chose to do evil and repeat that action?? They should be afforded that opprotunity?? And the unsuspecting second child victim???? No no no it definently does NOT work like that

  4. I have been waiting for this to e uploaded for years, thank you! I saw it once on T. V. back in the '80s and I recall seeing the book at a bookstore; I vividly recall the cover with the girl and the born, died, reborn dates on the tombstone.

As for folks here arguing about reincarnation being real or not, this movie is based off a fictional work. It is for our entertainment much like anything from Stephen King.

  5. Shlock. Schlock. Schlock. Schlock. This is fine as fiction…except for the known factor that humans are not rational when it comes to the concept of death and dying (among other things). We have such an over inflated sense of importance of self that we struggle with the stark reality that one day in the not too distant future, we will each be dead and gone. And so, desperate and silly people come up with irrational fairy tales about 'after lives', and 'other plains of existence', and 'reincarnation' and souls and heavens and…total unmitigated gobbledygook. And it spreads through the gullible, foolish, frightened, egotistical masses like a bad rash. There is no rational reason that anyone should believe this crap. Anthony Hopkins' character rambles on about the 700 million people believing in this crock of excrement right after describing their horrid living conditions. Is it any wonder that people living in abject poverty and squalor would find the psychological need to promise themselves that the wretched life they've been living is not the best that they will ever know? Cold "readings" and table knocking and 'spiritualism' are just the tools of charlatans preying upon emotional pain of the grieving and the fearful. This is the kind of shite that makes grieving people believe ab-so-fucking-lute nonsense. I'd like to take every so called 'psychic' and make them take a long walk off of a short pier.
