How to Pick a Class?

Picking the right class for your play style is an important part of Character Creation. Certain Races may have better affinity to specific Classes and Subclasses, for example. Additionally, you may want to opt for unique schools of magic based on Role-Play or simple preference. If you want to optimize your character and party, we suggest you check out our Builds section.
What are Subclasses?

Subclasses are specializations of a class. Players can opt for different branching paths and continue to benefit from the features of the initial class, while also gaining unique abilities for their Subclass. So a Rogue, for example, will have to opt to become a Thief or Arcane Trickster at level 3. From that point onward, the character will receive all the benefits of the Rogue class, plus the special benefits of their Subclass of choice.

Cleric
Clerics are representatives of the gods they worship, wielding potent divine magic for good or ill.
Life Domain ♦ Light Domain ♦ Trickery Domain

Fighter
Fighters have mastered the art of combat, wielding weapons with unmatched skill and wearing armour like a second skin.
Battle Master ♦ Eldritch Knight

Ranger
Rangers are unrivalled scouts and trackers, honing a deep connection with nature in order to hunt their favoured prey.
Beast Master ♦ Hunter

Rogue
With stealth, skill and uncanny reflexes, a rogue’s versatility lets them get the upper hand in almost any situation.
Thief ♦ rArcane Trickster

Warlock
Bound by a pact to an all-powerful patron, warlocks trade their loyalty for supernatural abilities and unique magic.
The Fiend ♦ The Great Old One

Wizard
Wizards master the arcane by specialising in individual schools of magic, combining ancient spells with modern research.
Abjuration School ♦ Evocation School

BG3 Early Access Warning: Not all Classes will be available at the start of early access, but all classes will be in the game at launch of the full game. Multiclassing is not available on release of the early access version.

  1. They had better change the wizard subclasses. Only letting us pick from the two most boring schools of magic really annoys me. Baldur's Gate one AND two had all the Wizard subclasses, and that was before subclasses were even a thing!

  2. Rogue is so busted in this game. I cleared out the entire goblin fortress using only the rogue. Sneak around with blessing of the trickster, snuff out the candles/braziers and just go ham! Sneak up on people, push them off cliffs(100% chance when sneaking), backstab on range, hide, wait a turn and do it again – over and over. The boss fights are a joke with this strat.

  3. D&D 5th edition is great for tabletop, but it requires a great DM (kinda like 2nd edition, back in the day) because it really requires a lot of house ruling and world building to make it not be bland or too simplistic. 3.5 edition was perfect for video games because it's so damn rules crunchy (a bit too much for tabletop gaming imo), with a HUGE emphasis on multi-classing to create your unique character — a kind of freedom which translates easily to a crpg. Multi-classing in 5th edition is usually a mistake, which isn't good for a video game. As a DM in 5th edition, if a player really wanted to multi-class for flavor reasons, I'd insist on giving him/her some free levels to do so just to keep them at the same powerlevel as the rest of the party (basically, I'd reward levels in the multiclass for roleplaying). That kind of DM-involved freedom doesn't translate to video games at all. Also, a big part of the appeal of the Warlock in tabletop is the tacit understanding that Eldritch Blast (or any ability for any class, really) can be re-flavored into whatever the player and DM agree upon — not something that can be done in a CRPG.

  4. Jesus the amount of people that want hexblade in this comment section is ridiculous. I don't get it, the subclass is thematically awkward, and mechanically totally unbalanced, what is to like about it? You want only a single ability score to matter? How is this fun?
I have made hexblades for the meme before, and they are just obscene, especially as a paladin multi– goodbye str investment, hello short rest smites for more-often crits.

  5. The main difference with the warlock patrons at early levels are 1st level abilities and what other spells they give you.
Also when I heard there were only Fiend and GOO, I let out the biggest “BOLLOCKS!” I’ve ever said. Then I hear you can only get part of the chain, I just sobbed a little. At least it’s early access so here’s hopping for more.

  6. No subclass features for GOO? wtf.

I hate that enough people bought this to reinforced the trend of early access being used they AAA devs, to get full AAA price, for a quarter of a AAA game.

The fact that they couldn't be asked to finish the 1st level for each subclasses that are IN THE GAME already is concerning.

  7. You keep mentioning Pillars of Eternity, but to me this game's class mechanics seems much closer to the old Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 series (especially the spells – some have the exact same name 😁) than POE. Great overview nonetheless! Thanks!

  8. First I found thief lackluster on lvl 3 with astarion but when i made on myself it was a lot more fun, feel like they slapped on the boring build on our dear vampire.

p.s. melee ranger is loads of fun!
