The most discussed topic leading to Early Access, was whether Baldur’s Gate 3 is indeed a Baldur’s Gate game, or if the influence of Divinity games overshadows the franchise. A lot of this discussion was centered around two topics: One, the UI and graphics, two, Real Time with Pause vs Turn-based. Let’s discuss the UI and graphics first.

The gameplay of Baldur’s Gate 3 can be easily divided between exploration and combat. Your first hour (or five) will be spent creating a character just to your liking, and you can dwell into the many races, sub-races, classes and sub-class options that make D&D incredibly fun. The character creator as well has gotten a face lift, and you’ll notice that it by doesn’t resemble Divinity any longer. Since the game does not show you progression for your Class when making your character, we have put together Class progression lines on the Wiki, so make sure to check that out if you want to think ahead when making your character.

Lastly we come to the big question: Is Early Access for you? This one will largely depend on your interest in providing developers with feedback so that they tailor the game to the community’s liking. Early Access will be full of bugs and issues, you will likely “spoil” yourself of story aspects and characters and tricks and not get to see a payoff until much later, and you will be doing testing for unpolished or unbalanced combat and mechanics. Many of the game’s features are not even in yet, such as Multiclassing, so you’ll likely have a much different experience than you will at launch.

That said, I wake up every day earlier than usual and eager to get to my computer to play more, because I don’t care about the bugs or unbalancing, the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 is simply calling me in and demanding that I explore it some more. I find myself very interested in the books I pick up, the companions I meet, their ideas and approval. I am eager to see what the next character level brings around and how the combat experience evolves over time. Despite it’s flaws, BG 3 is a compelling play, and it won’t take you long to realize this.

If you are a hardcore player that is invested in this being the game of your dreams, then I wholly recommend that you do get Early Access and participate in giving Larian as much feedback as you can regarding how you enjoy it or not, what bugs you find, and things you’d like to see. If you are a more casual player and rather enjoy a finished product, then I suggest you stay away and save yourself for the awesome final package that will surely come.

If you decided to jump into the game, or are curious about its mechanics, make sure to check out our Character Creation Guide, as well as our look at Races and Classes of BG3, all made with in-game information, as not everything follows what you expect from D&D to the letter. We’ll have more content up on the channel, we’ll be live on twitch of course, and there’s always the Wiki filling up with Companion and Quest information!

  1. 6:30 you get a crapload of on-use items you can use to make those large combats more interesting. Like in the footage you showed you could have dropped an Arcanists Fire (or whatever they are called) on the big group and then had another character throw the grenade type thing that sucks in enemies to that spot and taken out a bunch of the bad guys. Even a Grease Spell (or scroll, there are plenty in the game) + a fire arrow.

I agree, if you only just auto attack some combat can be boring, but you do have other options. I also think tweaking the game away from the D&D core rules for more excitement will be viewed negatively by a big chunk of the player base.

  2. Great Review and i would agree. I would also add…. Why not give the option of the entire party being a race of Githyanki orElf Or Dwarf, Halfling, Gnome… Human or Half Elf etc etc? Or give you the option to fly solo and you could have a mixture of Human, Dwarf, E l f or whatever in your party. One that would make the game more interesting and two that would make the game more massive with several different play through options. Making It A Well Deserved Storyline.

I mean after all these years why not come out with something HUGE with mad options and several different background storylines that eventually connect.

People like stories and people also like to feel involved Dragon Age Origins did this although briefly.. Which is what had hooked the people into the franchise and then they stepped away from that.. Only God Knows Why?? 🙄 and then they made DA 2 Which was complete jerkin time garbage… But Inquisition made up for 2 although they still didnt return to the Character Backstory. Which again gets the people more involved into the game.

The Return Of Baldur's Gate Has Been A Long Time Coming… Don't Come Back Halfsteppin Guys.

Im Really Excited To Play A Githyanki Character. My go to is normally Elf, Dwarf or Depending on the game, Orc.

Being a Githyanki I Think Would Be Badass.

    Don't Disappoint, Guys.
Make The Game BIG and Give Us Plenty Of Options With Character Back Stories.

I Mean Honestly,, How Many Years Has It Been??

  3. D&D WAs ment to be played turn based. I played mostly d&d games. since DOS games to the new 3d era. I was skeptical about this game. And this game revitalized part of my hope for good D&d RPG games. The rest will unfold with the rest of the baldurs gate 3 content.

  4. I disagree, it the problem with combat isn't dnd but the dumbed down version 5 they used. The programmers. Instead of setting up a group party order to control the party in single player mode
Makes the character control each npc. It's a lack of devopment skill not the core rule fault. Also previous dnd systems had varied skills to use not just repeatedly spamming the same few skills. All in all versions 2 had a much more content intense system, versions 3 had better combat and versions 4+ are nothing more than excuse to sell more books by the publisher. However as multi-player where each character is a pc this game does show promise.
However the stupid ability caps of 8 to 17 need to be removed. The ability ranges are 3 to 18 scores before racial abilities applied. And yes you can get modified 20 scores if you take penalties to a couple other scores.
That is dnd an mediocre jack of all trades or expert at one with weaknesses in others. Its called game balance, you have to pay for strengths in one area with weaknesses in others.

  5. BG2 was only real-time in battles that didn't matter. In ACTUAL battles, you had to pause after every cast to assess the situation and react accordingly. I'd like to see someone go against Liches or Dragons in Core-rules without pausing LOL.

  6. So, a mid-budget isometic (or at least top-down) game with a heavy emphasis on environmental hazards and pretty but generic-looking environments? It's basically D:OS 2 set in a D&D campaign. I wasn't too thrilled about D:OS 2. Played it, got most of the achievements in one playthrough. Generic characters and environments, annoying puzzles, totally random enemies and difficulty spikes. WAY too much emphasis on environmental hazards. Voice acting was hit or miss, and the plot was basically "go to island A, beat up enemies, go to island B, repeat." I may get Baldur's Gate III if it gets very good reviews and isn't quite so generic and focused on environmental hazards. And if they ever add Dragonborn, get them voices which sound like a big lizard or crocodile, not some British dandy.

Honestly, I much prefer the Avernum games to D:OS 2.

  7. Crashiest game. I cannot escape the vessel as the game starts to hog RAM in loading screens and crash when reaches over 12GB (in game uses barely over 6).
Tried vulkan, dx11, min settings, low resolution, low audio, admin rights, compatibility settings and nothing seems to help.

  8. Boy, he's complaining enough a lot basically about it being very much like playing D&D at levels one to three. There's a reason why a lot of campaigns, the DMs will just tell you to skip straight to level three so you have some interesting skills and your subclass already. Oh, and you played a ranger.

  9. My only real complaint for the game right now is how the AI handles in combat. All enemies will always rush past your frontline and attack your backline simply because they have the lowest AC. It being like this makes it hard to try and play a tank that takes all the blows to protect the backline. Also because they focus lowest AC first enemies will often attack downed party members first instead of the huling knight with a greatsword in its face. Perhaps a threat meter and a way to manipulate it would help resolve this issue. Besides this I've been loving the game and I think it's a spectacular game.

  10. LARIAN STUDIOS as of right now, this is simply Divinity Original Sin 3 and Pathfinder Kingmaker is actually Baldur's Gate 3, especially since your game so far uses just a 4 character party. I got bored playing your Original Sin 2 game.

  11. Idk about the graphics to be honest. The game looks way to similar to Divinity instead of the darker BG world. While i will still probably play BG3, it is off putting.
