  1. ps Gale is NOT James Macavoy, would be amazing if they got him to voice any char but it aint him. I'm pretty sure its the same person who voiced Alistair in DragonAge but cant find any official confirmation

  2. also looking at the comments as I watch this as a VOD… what controversey? Ive not heard any (beyond the usual few crazy folks who think everything is racist/sexist etc that always gets baindied around at every game regarldess of whether theres any justification or not) or maybe that the game is buggy or unfinihsed (despite the big flashing EARLY ACCESS, label that so many dont seem to grasp either? 😛

  3. You want to watch a few episodes of Critical Role, to learn about D&D magic and combat and mechanics. Laura Bailey (Serana from Skyrim) plays a trickster cleric awesomely. Her cupcake trick with The Hag basically won D&D.

  4. So this is claire's character in disguise as jon's character who is a french pirate, who is in disguise as a lightfoot halfling, who is in disguise as a strongheart halfling who is in disguise as a dwarf…geez that's more confusing than qui gon jinn's pod racing bet.

  5. As to original Jon, RuneQuest, a tabletop RPG from 1978 with older roots, and still going, had the Aldryami, its elves, who were plants, so Jon has fantasy precedent.

For Claire's off-hand "Tolkien was racist", I know that's a glib and easy strike often levelled at Tolkien, but I don't think that it stands up that well.

Not only did Tolkien tell the Nazis to do one (almost verbatim quote), in Middle Earth, the enemy humans are often that not by being inherently evil down to where they came from or the colour of their skin, but as a result of the Colonialism and Displacement of the "hero humans" in the past. The Dunlendings were kick off their land by Rohan and Gondor. The Haradrim had suffered from the Gondorians in the past.

As Sam, Tolkien's "Everyman character", says of a fallen harad warrior "He wondered what the man's name was and where he came from; and if he was really evil of heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home; and if he would rather have stayed there in peace"

The orcs are often pointed too as evidence of Tolkien's racism. There are problems with that argument too. For Tolkien being an orc was a moral state, not a racial state. As he wrote to his son of men become orcs by bullying etc, "in real life they are on both sides, of course”

He decried demonisation of peoples, and saw that problem with his portrayal of orcs, reducing their free will in his world to be more the product of Sauron. In part, as well of course, his depiction of Mordor and the condition of the Orcs there owes a lot to the slums and piece work of Industrial Birmingham, the so called Black Country"

People who call Tolkien racist usually then point to a letter he wrote about the description he gave in response to concepts for a film project. That's an interesting quote, because if quoted in full he owns his bias, using the phrase "to Europeans", ie that that the finding of "unloveliness" is not down to any inherent unloveliness, but the perception of the European.

Was he perfect? I doubt that. Was he the raving racist that is used as an easy jibe, I don't think the evidence supports that

  6. Jon-"I'm going to be a rogue because they're sneaky and can backstab people!"
Jon-Never tries to sneak or use sneak attacks.
Played a couple Rogue characters on table top and in RPGs, sneak attack is really the only thing that makes them viable in combat and he never uses that option. Usually I enjoy Jon's bumbling around, usually he ends up doing ok but seeing him struggle with fairly basic mechanics even though Clair and chat were both telling him how things work was damn hard to sit through…but still loved it because at least he showed me what not to do 😛

  7. It really hurts to hear "why can't I just…", in a game with a massive rule set. You can do pretty much everything you ask about, but it has to be within the rules and their elaborate frame. A very basic D&D knowledge is all that's needed, and you'll enjoy the game much more, including "breaking" the rules when possible, as NPC or PC also follows the rules. Let Claire give you a simple introduction, and you'll get more enjoyment from the game along with more viewing pleasure.

  8. I know people get upset about not getting thier messages read out and there has to be income, but it gets annoying when you come to watch someone talk about something or play a game say like a sentence then just read comments out. I get it, interactivity yadda yadda. Its refreshing when these guys just banter and give chat a break for 5 mins

  9. Jon's not wrong tbh.

Spell slots not being slots, and actually being charges, actions, bonus actions, reactions, cantrips… there's so many terms, and that's before you even get in to which saving throw, ability throw, or proficiency is relevant.

It doesn't help that the people tending to explain things usually just go "Oh that's just a skill check so it's just proficiency plus ability" etc. Without ever really bothering to explain what those things are.

When explained well, it's fine. Such as with death saves. But they're really not user friendly when you're just winging it in a stream.

  10. In 5e, Grease is basically worthless.
In every other edition, Grease is among the single most powerful spells that could possibly exist, and right alongside Glitterdust you can barely quality as a wizard if you don't have these two vital, all-powerful spells that turn the tides of entire battles. The "God Wizard" build depends on being able to cast one spell, then sit back and relax for the rest of the fight.

  12. What's funny is how the transition from Tabletop Game to Video Game changes priorities on things. Like the Wizard spell load out. On the tabletop I'd never NOT take Grease. It's just far, far, faaaar too useful as anything from a combat debuff to an escape spell to a utility spell for exploration, etc. But it depends on having a DM who can work with you and say: "Yeah, yeah I get that." Something the computer just can't do.

It's probably why I'm usually iffy on the brute force translations (as in just try to directly use the mechanics of, without what makes it interesting of human interpretation and interaction) of D&D to a video game. For my money the best D&D video game I played… was actually Shadows over Mystara. An arcade brawler done by Capcom in like, 1993? It's bundled (as it was a sequel to Tower of Doom) on Steam as "Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara" if I recall. Honestly fun games if you like the genre. Capcom in the 90s, they know brawlers.

  13. "A smarmy git?" I liked that bit, I'd have never guessed. Been enjoying this alpha release for a couple weeks now and thought I'd check out a couple videos. SurrealBeliefs has a great, polished run through going but also love yours. I'm still laughing over the struggles of learning a new system and game. Your stumbling is really quite informative. I'm currently wondering if the tools (shovels, hammers, tongs…) have any use right now. The jumping thing, yeah, really need some group commands.
