Basically A Scam: PS5 Aftermarket Cooling Fans Blow the Wrong Way

These PlayStation 5 cooling fans & cooling base accessories literally do nothing, and even worse, they make the performance worse. We apply our strict thermal & noise tests to accessories.

Console cooling fans are common aftermarket accessories for all generations of console, but this particular generation is interesting for another reason: The third-party “cooling fan” manufacturers jumped the gun, especially with low supply of the consoles, and we’re not sure that they even tested their own devices. It’s amazing that the cooling fans fit at all, but the ones we chose — one of which has over *300* reviews on Amazon, mostly positive — actually make things worse. The only thing going for these cooling fans is that we think the design is simply incompetent and likely isn’t malicious — but you could absolutely make an argument that selling a product without validating it has underlying ill intent.

  1. Like we said in the video, flipping the fans is pointless because (A) this thing screams and you shouldn't use it anyway, (B) the plastic impedes more airflow than the fans add, (C) attempting to accelerate the exhaust in this manner is only going to make things worse.

  2. I expect the majority of positive reviews at least are fake. Who knows what unwanted items were shipped to those people in order to trick Amazon into allowing those reviews? Given how cheap these things must be to produce, they could send those people the actual product and get their money's worth!

  3. I do believe you when you say reversing the fans in the unit#2 is insufficient to make it perform… but i would like to see it tested regardless just how bad it is exactly 😀

And while it's still wrong, i wonder if next step, removing some plastic, would make any difference.

  4. "Cooling mods are definitely going to be a 'Hot Topic' " Good one! Why would you make such a cooling mod, for a device that already has a big blower? At the very least, the supplemental fans should be at least as big as the included blower.

On the bright side, the fans aren't screwed down. That means that you could potentially reverse the polarity of the air flow, if you wanted to. I'm sure it wouldn't affect things enough to be worth the price, but it might be interesting to see, if it affects the results in a way that's helpful in the slightest.

  5. My friend got one for his 360 when the red ring fear was at it's strongest. It sounded like a coffee grinder and the power port melted. His 360 also red ringed so… that worked out… I was never interested in them, but after that, I knew never to touch them.

  6. I've had tons of aftermarket cooling fans for various consoles, all cheap chinese units. Roughly half of them blew the wrong way and I had to go in and flip them lol as well as cut out some plastic because the fans weren't good enough and were just creating restriction. I still buy them to play with them because I like the idea.

  7. I purchased the PS5 stand model. Set it up and turned on the fan and it was so loud that I turned it off and never turned it back on. But on the plus side it makes the PS5 a little sturdier standing up and the controller dock works ok plus mine has a spot to hang your headphones.

  8. There's a lost party of adventurous PC gaming hardware enthusiasts wandering aimlessly inside the hot endless void of Thermaltake's dark bag of exhaust-holding. For years now they've been desperately searching for a way out of the burning pocket dimension after being teleported there by the evil wizards in Thermaltake's tower of nefarious marketing. They seek nothing else but freedom from the constant influx of 90⁰ C air. Air that carries pestilent clouds of cat hair, dead human skin cells, pastry and Dorito crumbs, which regularly combine to form giant roaming dust clouds not unlike a sandstorm of the great dunes of Calradia.

  9. It's an Evil masterplan to destroy as many PS5's as possible took keep stock low, so they are able to sell more scalped PS5's… I can almost hear the scalpers laugh in their evil lair…

  10. You know a ps5 panel replacement or DIY mod with a nice strong PC fan over the blower intake would be both easy and effective.
Take it a step further and seal of the original intakes and and a dust filter to the purposed fan would be even better.

  11. Someone actually went to the effort to design this, tool it up and manufacture it, they even came up with a clever mounting mechanism. I don't understand how they can go to all that effort and still be terrible..

  12. I dont even care if it wouldn’t change anything im pretty sure me and alot of others would have loved to see too see the fans flipped. It wouldn’t have taken much effort. Not hating just saying. With the ammount it was mentioned it felt like it was being set up but then it just never happened. Missed content opportunity
