  1. this whole thing is kinda just a wiki quote on top of fancy moving pictures, there are some actual lore videos
if you want some basic lore – have to sit through Brickys's two hours of "Every single Warhammer 40k Faction Explained", i personally dislike his videos, but there are not many alternatives for beginners, everything else is either dramatic yet completely dry wikipedia reads or advanced deep lore videos with a lot of fluff
about thousand souls a day – not any souls, but 1000 souls of psykers ("magic users", to make it simple, more rare than regular humans) to keep 'astronomicon' working (something like extra-dimensional lighthouse which enables ftl travel between stars) and by extension – 'golden throne' of the emperor (life support, but more complex than that)
about fancy guards at 6:40 – just one of the regiments of imperial guards, technology and culture in imperium ranges from actual medieval times to full scifi, depending on particular planet, as a result you get something like Imperial Knights – huge mechs controlled by pilots who are actually knights from noble houses

  2. The templin institutes good for faction overviews
Occulus imperia does lore from an in universe perspective.
Baldemorte is a good source of lore. I would recomend you start with his shock attack gun video.

A good place to start would be the space marines as they are so iconic to the setting. Luten09 did a good vid and I would also recomend Roanoke Gaming two part vid on the implants they get.

  3. Templin institute is a very good start.
You have to watch "imperium of man" video and then "the god emepror of mankind" video (this will give you a base of understanding from which you can start to learn about the biggest fictional universe)

  4. Yep, there is a reason why those 1000 psychically gifted humans are sacrificed each day.
Basically in 40k there is both the physical reality, and the warp. The warp isn't some "empty" alternate dimension, but it's a bit like in the movie Event Horizon – it's a semi-spiritual realm filled with psychic energy, souls, and soul-devouring daemons. It's pretty much hell.
Just like in various horror movies a villain with psychic powers may try to prolong his life or gain powers by consuming the souls of other people, the same happens with the Emperor. He has to consume 1000 souls a day (of high quality, i.e. other psychically gifted souls) to stay barely alive and to be able to project a psychic light beacon that is used for FTL travel navigation through the warp/hell. Not out of malice, but cold hard necessity.

In the meantime (10,000 years since he was entombed on the Golden Throne and put on life support), the Imperium that he wanted to lead into an age of peace, prosperity and science has devolved into a totalitarian theocracy nightmare, worshipping him as a god and persecuting anyone who is even accused of deviating one bit from that doctrine with utmost zeal.
