I like to talk a good game about character design on this channel, but maybe it’s past time I put my money where my mouth is!
… by paying someone else to do it for me. Well, kinda. I mean I *helped*.

Anyway, the Freljord is governed by the ancient and lore-heavy trifecta of the Three Sisters. One of them, though, feels more than a little out of place… Let’s see if we can build a better Ashe.

  1. You can find Applecork’s art from this video and more in the links below:

EDIT: Not for nothin', but if you're fine with space dragons, talking bear gods and Egyptian god furries, but you're coming into my comments like "a fat woman being a good archer is nOT rEaLiSTIc!!!!" then you really need to check your head.

  2. Plus size ashe does not make sense lore wise for me, she is called the warmother. Although I do agree that she needs a bit more age to fit the title, making her plus size doesn't either. She is supposed to be a queen who marches into battle with her people and not a care taker mother. Applecork nailed it in my opinion. I really love the battle scar on her face emphasizing her military background and how harsh life is in the Freljord

  3. I absolutely love apple cork's design. T B's ain't bad but I feel looks to old to fit the young idealist she's supposed to be as well as the noted lesser display of the warrior culture she's partly meant to embody. Both designs are however FAR better than standard ash from league. I think taking some of the ornamentation from TB's design and adding them to apple cork's design could really help define the chief of the tribe vibe TB was going for and add that into Apple Cork's design.

  4. I've played Ashe since 2013 when I started playing League, and I pretty much agree with all of the problems. I mostly gravitate towards using Project Ashe, as I like her thematic a lot more, but the regular skins are far from underused for me as well. It's just very, very weird to hear preaching for gods and peace in the wintery cold of the Freljord come from someone who is dressed like a blue Seraphine with a hood. I think her Legends of Runeterra design would be a very good upgrade in its own right, knowing that Ashe is more of a target for mini-reworks and not so much a full visual update, bringing that design over would be fine in my book as it does accentuate her clan more. However, I don't agree with the part about her having to contrast a certain way with Lissandra and Sejuani. Because, in her lore, Ashe seeks to bring peace to the Freljord and unite all the clans under a single banner so they can be stronger together. She seeks to bring the tradition and lust for war in the Freljord to an end, and I keeping a different, more "out there" look for her has a lot of benefits in that context, as she's trying to have her clan not be typically Freljordian.

  5. I love both designs so much and I feel like.. applecork's design fits Ashe really good at current time, and I imagine your design more as she's growing older, after having her first or second child, and just being the elderly leader after all wars and such are over and there's finally true peace.

Because I think it's important to remember she's from a warrior tribe and thus would be built as more of a warrior still, because they still have to defend themselves and fight to keep their peaceful ways and thus she wouldn't really get out of that shape until later when she's doing less of the fighting and more organising during peacetime. So I feel like this is like a before and after picture really 😅

First you have present day when they are still trying to establish and still have to fight for their place in the world and struggle with the other two tribes.

And then we have like 15-30 years later when perhaps wartimes are over or at least less prevalent and she doesn't have to fight as much and her figure gets a bit wider and perhaps she gave birth to a few children and now leads as the war mother, in a more political kind of leader being a leader and more spiritual and guiding the tribe. She wouldn't have to be as agile anymore and the birth of a couple of children would also help widen her figure a bit.

  6. Apple corks design choice was overall better because she IS an ADC so her frame should represent that, your design choice and concept of plenty would suite her if Ashe was a support but she’s not.

  7. Could you guys make a better lux as a video suggestion, idk i feel like the actual Lux looks more like a commoner instead of a nobel, and wth does she wears armory if she's a light mage that has been recently banned from demacia.

The ideal lux I see is one with more translucent clothing and a lighter blond hair, she wears a white short cloak a bit like the one she wears in the Warriors cinematic, plus she wears a long dress. I really hope u take my suggestion and ofc feel free to tweak her design the way u find better.

  8. I think both designs are interesting takes/updates for the character as a whole and think either can more clearly express her story. Although I think a missing reference from the original that was misinterpreted is the classic Rebel Archer. She's a archer for her people against the other oppressive clans seeking unity, I think an even more roguelike design with added leathers possibly a mask and subtle furs on a smaller frame of a stealth hunter would suite her well aswell

  9. Applecork’s design is so incredibly good what the hell

I also think yours is good, however what you gain in the "caring mother" archetype, you lost in the young and hopeful revolutionary

  10. Finally someone that calls out this "well if you can't do it better, you can't criticize!" madness. It's so stupid on all levels, and people who use those arguments are pathetic, and if you feel offended, I'm sorry, I mean full offense

Also criticizing how the characters look isn't criticizing the artists, since they are doing incredible, its the design choices that deserves criticizing, and tbf, it makes that pathetic argument actually pointless, since Skyen has literally done a better job on idealizing design choices several times already when it comes to several characters… cough Kai'Sa cough

  11. (Comment from the Design Ideation phase)
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about Skyens design path I guess, in a war torn land like Freljord, it does seem strange how large Ashe would be, especially as a Warmother you'd think she would be one of the last to ever overfeed at any point (aka giving out extra food to children or to store over time for example)
I have nothing against overweight people, especially as I am myself one, but what I mean is in a world like Freljord, it doesn't seem all that logical for anyone to actually be overweight in general. Especially with how important food in that time would be in a snow/tundra region.

… also for some reason she kinda looked a bit short, like dwarf size for some reason

  12. I 110% support Applecork's interpretation for the current, young Ashe.
The Legend of Zelda look makes Ashe appear very important and heroic.
The Skyen take would be perfect for an older Ashe that has already accomplished her goals.

  13. One issue I know there could be with making Ashe physically bigger and more muscular is riots idea that you should know what type/class of champion a champion is based on the silhouette. Making Ashe plus sized or more muscular might make the silhouette look more like a top lane bruiser or something which could be an issue. These where brilliant designs though, I loved them.

  14. I can't agree with your character design either because there's no way I see her being effective in battle I'm like apple corks design. The Lord definitely fits the character design as a B character in the story though

  15. Big Ashe is a cool idea, but the "War Mother" still has "War" in it. If Ashe were a line archer of some sort her size wouldn't matter, but the way she's always been depicted is as an agile, sharpshooting hollywood archer. Like most of the commenters I think this could be Ashe in her late forties to fifties, but as a raw redesign I don't think a bigger Ashe works. Regardless, good video!

  16. My only issue is that she holds her bow in her right hand, and both of you put gloves on her right hand that, to me, look more like they'd make sense on her drawing hand than the bow holding one. I don't think you'd wear heavy armor on the hand that's constantly moving, especially since you have to raise it over your shoulder to grab arrows.

  17. While making Ashe plus-sized doesn't necessarily hurt from a story and lore perspective, it does hurt from a game design perspective. In-game, bigger characters are typically associated with slow hard-hitting tanks. Whereas long-range fighters like Ashe are expected to have a slimmer, lither frame. It's unfortunate, but when designing a character for a competitive video game like League of Legends, gameplay must always come first.

  18. I don't feel like the larger body shape works for an archer. Yes it's unique, but I feel like there could be a different type of character that fits that shape.
Maybe a tank/support type character instead

  19. Skyen im curios when it comes to cherecherecter designs most champions are more or less memorebel but shen and zed (ninja and shreder) how would u want them to change? As lore and design

  20. Ashe is too tall in game. she's a marksman from a northern land. she needs that added protection against the cold, but also something that allows her to climb a tree or swiftly change advantage points.
she should look more like an awkward leader. someone that was put in a position of power instead of growing in it. she shouldn't look much distinct from any of her other tribe members.
to avoid following the hardened ways of Sejuani and fearing her might in battle, she should show more concern with political affairs and influence.

while i don't have many ideas for her body type. i still think that she should have some scar from a failed hunt, some injury from a bad fall from her younger days.
her clothes should resemble more to her tribes just like suggested, but nothing that would make her look in anyway superior to them.
finally, while cloth and feathers looks great, she also needs more brown leather.

all said and done i love both of your designs. i have preference for Apple Cork's leather gloves with no gold, short skirt and hood designs and for T B Skyen's cape with a more functional approach and scarf with animal fur showing on the bottom.
My personal modifications would be cloth boots with leather appearing almost like armor and replacing the white wraps with a brown leather under bust corset. while preserving the marksman chest guard.
