The Potato Masher is a $375 budget PC build from late 2014, designed to compete with the PS4 for the rest of its lifecycle. The Potato Masher Pro is a side-series where I drop in a new GPU and compare it against the Playstation 4 Pro.

Here are the Potato Masher’s specs:
Xeon x3440 overclocked to 3.4 ghz
Asus P7H55 LGA 1156 motherboard
8GB DDR3 memory
MSI GTX 760 2GB (Masher) | Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB G1 Gaming (Masher Pro)
320GB Samsung Spinpoint HDD
Cooler Master Wavemaster Case
Arctic Alpine 11 GT cpu cooler
EVGA 430 watt PSU
Logitech KB+M combo
Windows 10 64-bit

  1. Your original masher was a build that really helped me get into PC gaming back in my senior year of High School. In fact, I still daily mine, but it's upgraded at this point. Back in 2015 my build was as follows:

    i5 2320 3.0 GHz
    8GB DDR3
    GTX 950

    But now I have:

    Xeon e3 1245 3.3GHz
    8GB DDR3
    R9 390x

Really, my masher build was an excellent purchase and I can't thank you enough for videos from creators as yourself that really tried to explain that PC gaming could be accessible. I'm able to run CP 2077 at Medium-High settings at about 45-50FPS if I turn off SSR settings or mess with Dynamic Resolution settings. I plan on upgrading this year, and I'll always appreciate my now 6 year old masher for going strong to this day! Also says a lot that I used my masher all the way through University for papers, etc. PS4 couldn't have done that lol!

  2. Glad to see you post again man! Been wondering for a while now where you've been. Your voice seems a bit sad in this video. Don't be too hard on yourself. Can't wait for the finale (hope just for the series, not for the channel, and hope that a potato masher V2 is possible).

  3. I stopped watching after he said the game should not have been released on ps4 and xbox one … it was announced in 2012. ps4 and xbox one are the current consoles out right now. the game's website EXPLICITELY states out now for xbox first then ps4 and then pc while stating for all of 20 people also plays great on ps5 and xbox whatever it's called.

  4. Hey stop being so hard on yourself. You made some of the best pc videos on YouTube and helped countless people. I’ve rewatched a lot of them all the time as they’re one of the things that help me when I’m down. So thank you for all the hours you’ve put in for all of us and what ever you do next i hope you enjoy it!
Ps your viva tuner video has been a god send over the years.

  5. I have missed this guy like i have missed an old school friend who has gone offline for a long long time. šŸ™

I knew you were not gonna return anytime soon but I have kept rewatching all your videos and used some of those testing methodology to build new refurbished pcs. I got to know about rivatuner through your video. Every time Linus makes a thrift pc/ budget pc video I tell myself JERM would have done a hell lot better. Everytime i watch Digital Foundry talks about frame rate and frame time; somehow it reminds me of you. I have unsubscribed so many channels since I subscribed your, to tidy up my sub box; but every time i come to yours' I go through all your videos, just watching and reliving some good times. I just love your channel man. Hope you are doing well.

    P.S: sorry for bad english

  6. Man, glad to have u back… I always love this series, tho it kinda makes me old now..
But, this may be the end, but this is also a new start too.. Don't be too hard on yourself, man.

Potato Masher was one of my inspiration to build a pc back then, and I have one now with rather good hardware and I'd prolly stick with it for years until it can't keep up.

    Stay safe and healthy ā¤ļø

  7. It's great to see the series back!
Perhaps you can build a PS5 killer around the same price in a little while (with used components ofc) and that series can run until 2028 or so until the PS6 is out.

  8. I literally had a passing thought of what happened to this channel and decided to check back in. I hope you end up continuing this series, I love what you do. Even if it means making a Potato Masher 2.0 to match the new next gen consoles. šŸ™‚

  9. Really missed you and the other guys too. I would say the Potato Masher held up pretty dang good for the most part. You considering maybe in a year or so after the market recovers (going to be a while before hardware recovers from material and component shortages) doing anything for the new-gen? Not necessarily a Potato Masher 2 but maybe a mini-series or look into the next-gen and PC gaming?

  10. I think one of the main performance issues is that the graphics barely scale below certain point – low graphics look pretty much better than the aaa title from few years ago on high settings, but at the cost of performance. Unlike many games the Cyberpunk has a really high bar to even run it at all. It's funny when you consider how it was exactly the other way around with The Witcher 3.

  11. Another good video. I miss seeing your videos soo much! You should be proud of your self because you stuck with the series like you said you were going to. Most people would have gave up after 1 MAYBE 2 years. I love this series so much that it sucks to see it end.

You are a complete legend in my eyes because you put your money where your mouth was and did and showed a Potato Masher video and not just do another one of those lame "$500 console killer build" type of video then play a few games and that was all.

It would be interesting if you did keep this series going by doing a new build or upgrading this one again.

I found myself a month or two ago looking at your channel wondering where you'd gone, so glad to see your doing alright and nothing bad happened. Wish you all the best with your future. Also, your vids ggot me interested in low-budget videos, so that something to br proud of.
