Sony does have one advantage. The PS5 can push through data at 5.5 GB per second, compared to the Xbox Series X, which works at 2.4GB per second. That could mean marginally faster load times, and less time spent on a loading screen. Both consoles are evenly matched elsewhere.
The PS5 is an extremely powerful piece of technology, capable of outputting 4K resolutions at 120 FPS. But users will have to make sure their console is set up correctly to see the benefit of their new hardware.
When it comes to the processor, the Xbox Series X is slightly more powerful than the PlayStation 5, though the difference doesn’t have much impact on the gaming experience.
The new Xbox’s processor, or CPU, can go up to marginally faster clock speeds at 3.8 Gigahertz compared to the PS5’s 3.5 Gigahertz.
The PS5 GPU is an AMD Radeon RDNA 2 with variable frequency that goes up to 2.23GHz, as well as 10.3 teraflops and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. We are talking about a significant improvement over the past generations, and one powerful enough to last for the entirety of this new cycle.
On paper, the Xbox Series X looks more powerful than the PS5. But in practice early game tests show the PS5 outperforming Microsoft’s console. … With the Xbox Series X capable of 12 teraflops of GPU performance vs. 10.28 teraflops on the PS5, most onlookers expected there to be a small gap between the consoles.
Sony does have one advantage. The PS5 can push through data at 5.5 GB per second, compared to the Xbox Series X, which works at 2.4GB per second. That could mean marginally faster load times, and less time spent on a loading screen. The PS5 console supports the HDMI 2.1 specification, and it also supports 4K 120Hz video output.
One of the big selling points of next-gen consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series X is support for games running at 120fps on TVs and monitors that include 120Hz modes. The PS5 is capable of running existing PS4 games at 120fps, but there’s clearly more work involved for developers to enable it.
The Series X and PS5 have 1080p as one of their primary resolution choices, which tells you it’s fully supported and not shortchanged in terms of appearance. The only difference is really pixel count. The Series X and PS5 both support AMD FreeSync to prevent screen tearing and ensure a consistent framerate.
Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X cost $500 apiece. Since the two systems are very similar, this category would seem to be a tie at first glance. However, the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X are not the only variants available. There’s also the $400 PS5 Digital Edition and the $300 Xbox Series S.
PS5 8K IS POSSIBLE IN FUTURE UPDATES
“PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and after a future system software update will be able to output resolutions up to 8K when content is available, with supported software,” Sony says. For now, the PS5 will only be able to render video output at 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K 2160p resolutions. Unlike the Xbox Series X, Series S, and the One X before them, the PS5 won’t output natively to 1440p monitors, instead scaling up from 1080p.
HDMI 2.0 4K 120HTZ SUPPORT
HDMI 2.0 (effectively HDMI 2.0b since late 2016) can do 4K 120Hz. This mostly applies to PC, where cards like the GTX 2080 Ti can actually pull off 120 frames per second in certain games while running in 4K. The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X won’t allow 120Hz in 4K anyway.
