Cyberpunk 2077 loves to reference philosophers … but does it actually have a philosophy of its own?

Cyberpunk 2077 has had a lot of people talking – mostly about its fiasco of a rollout. But once you’re able to get the game to work, you’ll find that it’s exploding with sly references to everyone from author Ernest Hemingway to philosopher Descartes. So is the game actually as smart as it thinks it is? Let’s find out in this Wisecrack Edition on Cyberpunk 2077: Deep or Dumb?

  1. Holy crap you’re a real person?! I saw this same video on K and I would have sworn you were cgi or a silicone faced robot. Freaky. What’s with the roosters on your shirt though? That some freudian thing, bruh?

  2. I am so tried of idiots thinking misplaced and clearly misunderstood philosophical (at best and at worst respectively) references somehow makes something better or smarter than it really is. Worse still is when they take those grossly misused and overused bits and attempt to use them with motivations of self aggrandization. Worse greater still is when the lack of contextual information or more likely the source material at all. This false intellectualism is a big contributor to many "movements" that would have people think they are informed and moral in their understanding of their cause when in fact they have all the intellectual credibility of a Qanon believer.

  3. and who am I as the player? am I slowly becoming V, while V is slowly becoming Johnny and am I thus becoming Johnny? who am I after playing this game?

also, you wrongly assumed V to be male – she's a female though 😉

  4. Video suffers from the format as it has a black and white/deep or dumb/right or wrong approach. It presumes, that the 'source material' (Locke, neuromancer, other philosophers) is necessarily 'deep' all the time.

While surely a lot of the questions that are posed (eg. theseus' ship) are complex dilemmas that can not be truly solved in a satisfying way, it can also be said that Ideas of the "source material" are outdated (eg. Descartes. Tania Singer found that brain plasticity is influenced by behaviour. So its proven that physical brain and thinking mind are connected) or not 'deep' themselves.

Still enjoyed your analysis. But maybe you're also (perhaps knowingly) asking to much from a video game plot, that needs to primarily entertain. For what it is, i find it super compelling and contemporary. Which (at least mainstream) title ever allowed you to play as a trans-person or date a depressed porn-editor? How would you package a critical analysis of abstract concepts of identity in a format like this? Its not a dissertation, its a video game and at that one.

Also you missed a few points as @VaeSapiens alrady pointed out.

    Thanks still! Good channel

  6. From a total non-gamer, a lot of the major features of this game seem to be lifted from Omikcron: The Nomad Soul. I only say that because I have a fleeting memory of it from my youth, and it had a body switching element. Don’t hate me, haha.

  7. i think the relationship between V and Johnny is one of, if not THE, greatest part of the game. you start out at odds against each other and slowly become close and understand each others feelings about the situation

  8. I wouldn’t say Cyberpunk 2077 is dumb, but I would agree that it’s a missed opportunity. I say it’s not dumb because the game doesn’t outright say really stupid things as much as it doesn’t say a lot to begin with. But the fact that it doesn’t explore its themes as mechanically or narratively as much as, say, a SOMA or a Nier Automata doesn’t mean it’s dumb (or that it’s bad, for that matter). It’s just that the goals the game set out to achieve were somewhat different.

My understanding of the Cyberpunk franchise is that Mike Pondsmith wanted an RPG with Blade Runner’s aesthetic, but also recognized that a protagonist in such a setting has too little agency to befit a role-played game. He then added more rock ‘n’ roll to counteract that, ending up with protagonists like Johnny and V and stories like Cyberpunk 2077. And looking at it from that angle, yeah, I’d say this game is successful (although not philosophically all that meaningful).

  9. I don't think extra time would have helped the story at all. They had years. This was the story they wanted to put out there.

Extra development time usually is just to fix performance issues and smooth things out. Stories, at least from a birds eye view, are usually the first things completed.

  10. Funny. I walked away feeling the game had a message of principle over nihilism. Not even mentioned here. Always feels like WiseCrack is just flexing it's ability to name drop dead dudes

  12. Remember, this is a CDPR story and I don't think they are done yet telling it. They did announce their will be several DLCs that may surprise us with some banging stories like The Witcher 3.

  13. I think we can all agree that all the bugs and lack of development undermined the story of cyberpunk, which is a pretty good plot, though, again, not nearly well developed. if they started to think on the project, rather on the visuals and BREATHTAKING, INNOVATIVE GAMEPLAY, maybe we could've had an amazing story with us. but… yeah, shit happens I guess?
