Cowboy, try playing (on your next playthrough or this one) without the minimap. Gives you a whole new sense of immersion. There are arrows next to the exclamation marks for mission objectives that give you and indication of where you have to go. So that helps enough and give you the possibility to disable the minimap. I play after 20hour into the game without the minimap and it really changes the way the game feels. You start looking around instead of looking to the topright corner.
