Here we discuss the issue with the save file corruption with Cyberpunk 2077 when it reaches 8MB and the reasons why it seems to be happening. Hint: Don’t grind crafting and don’t hoard.

EDIT: Also, to clarify, the number of crafting MATERIALS do not appreciably affect the save file size, up or down.
Crafting is not broken strictly speaking, I finished the game with maxxed crafting and only a 5.3mb save. Spamming tons of trash items will apparently bloat your save but you get significantly more exp per craft for higher tier items and upgrades. So dont despair fellow crafters but do get your skill up by crafting better stuff rather than more stuff.
Why the hell is it 8mb anyway? My Skyrim saves are hundreds of mb and they still load just fine…
This video deserves more views
Just incredibly Amsteurish of CDPR to Fuck this up. Im AMAZED that they decided to go from being the most RESPECTED game company out there…to being CLOWNS of the industry. Cash is King but not if you Prostitute yourself in the process.
Simply put CDPR management f@#$ed up with this game. The devs were only doing their jobs.
The reducing size my be a simple thing of deleting object id references from the save, by checking if it exists within the game world when performing a save….
Why the 8Mb limit crashing it, thought? Does anyone smarter then me have any idea? Engine limitation?
Sort of saw this issue coming (since so many big RPGs have such limit), but it is worrying that getting the items out of the inventory still does not reduce the file size. Thanks for the heads-up and additional search for a solution.
I'm probably just talking out of my arse, but my speculation is that CDPR did NOT use a proper serialization to save the gamestate: Rather than actually going through all the data structures and dump them in a tidy and consistent way, they just dump the shared memory containing all game states into a binary file.
This is indicative from the fact that utilizing/removing items do not cause the memory usage to go down: Because the list containing the items is in the middle of the shared memory, while there are other game states on the topmost and bottommost locations of the shared memory, if the game does not do proper GC + memory compacting, the shared memory won't ever shrink.
To make matters worse, the piece of code that reads the game state from the savegame file does not grow the shared memory. So the saveloader starts with 8 MiB, reads the file and dumps it into the game state memory, got an exception because the state memory is full, and repeats the procedure all over again without first growing the game state memory size. This might explain the black screen / long loading time before crash.
Again, this is just one man's speculation drawn from that one man's arse. Might be true, might be wildly incorrect.
Moral of my long-winded speculation: Devs please use proper serialization to save the state of your program. Don't just revert to a memory dump. You'll save yourself a lot of grievance. There's an embarrassing richness of possible serialization formats: XML, JSON, YAML, MessagePack, Apache Thrift, and so on. Or you can go heavy and use embedded sqlite with file-backed storage. Just don't do memory dump, please!
If someone unsubscribed because of the last video, I think they are so freakishly unwilling to hear something bad It's probably a phobia or something, that, or they misheard that you refer to the publisher corporate shills, not the devs.
BEST sponsor lead in yet… if not ever !
Wow, that’s a really basic problem to cause so much trouble!
So i cant backup my CP77 save on my PS2 memory card ?
So playing an rpg ….. like an rpg, will brake your save ?
Sad to see CDPR going the Bethesda route and releasing a broken game for hackers to fix…
I did some testing on this myself. More items in inventory = bigger filesize, including crafting materials. The solution is to just not have a whole lot of shit in your inventory. Use the crafting engram to make a ton of common / uncommon materials to condense them. There's no reason to have thousands of grenades for example. The person that did the testing in this video said nothing about the actual crafting materials, nor have I seen mention of that elsewhere.
Also, don't craft trash items. Craft the best items you can. Big xp + far, far less items made.
Yeah it's dumb that there's a size limit on the save, but it seems to be mostly avoidable.
"Don't play this rpg like an rpg and you'll be fine" basically.
i can only guess that it's not running an inventory clean-out the UI probably skips over things with amounts ending in 0 to help speed along production as it is hard to catch in in testing and it's causing bloat and screwing with the id and save systems
Can't wait for the DLCs when they will without a doubt add more craftable items and more story content.. Yaaaaay
Sucks that I really like crafting cause it allows me to actually using some iconics and not feel hinderd in my choice of gear. Guess I'll just have to stop this save im playing on atm due to it haaving crafting.
All I know is, I beat the game as a street kid, then started a new story as a nomad. After playing that for a while I wanted to play as my previous character so I switched back to the old save but then ended up loosing my nomad save cause the game kept autosaving over it. Is there any way I can access my different saves as a nomad and a street kid?
so when that guy said he play 150 hours and hadn't tried everything… he any crafting
Man I am barely done with Act 2 and I have 5.5 mb. Am I fucked?
I have some new info to report, unfortunately… I was playing the game and about half an hour ago I could hear some weird background noise like drops of water touching a hot skillet. Volume increased gradually regardless of where I went in the city, and after about 10 minutes something flew out onto my lap: a goddamn live snake! I put it in a makeshift cage and considered naming it Stanley, but then I spied an object on the seat of my computer chair. It was a book, and as I looked over the arcane writing on the strange cover the game could be overheard sounding as if chanting. The guttural noises finally clicked as the volume reached a crescendo as well as what book I held: their strange language was, in fact, their words to summon Chthulu out of this book that was-you guessed it- the Necronomicon! I grabbed Stanley and got the hell out of there, and now we travel the country in an RV.
Here is what's baffling me. I am currently playing on a ps5 with 40 hrs of gameplay and my save file size is 12.59. I asked a friend who is on ps4 pro who has only played less than 5 hrs, and he says his game file size is 12.59 as well. This leads me to believe that it might just be affecting both console players and pc who are using the duplication glitch excessively, causing the game to go corrupt due to the insane amount of crafting materials and items that the game was originally not meant to hold.
Sounds like, with some reverse engineering of how the save file is structured, some modders can create a save editor that will do garbage collection on outdated/discarded item data.
But it would be best if the game itself did the garbage collection, like it should.
I'm confused by this issue.
I'm at 96 hours, 1.5 completions(bad+sour endings), 22 achievements, and 20 engineering/craft. My save game is at 5.3meg currently and was at 5.2meg a few days ago.
To be said I also exploited cheat engine to give myself money and have been WOEFULLY buying shit, breaking it down, crafting, ect… Despite my abuse of this I haven't run into the 8meg file size problem. A lot is still hindered by rngesus and some things can't be bought or crafted…
For comparison my wife's filesave is 5.2meg at similar hours without abusing the crafting system. So.
Remember when idiots were sending death threats to CDProjektRed for not getting the game out fast enough?
Entertainingly the debug console could have been used to give you the items that you would break your game by crafting but CDPR made the "brilliant" choice of removing the debug console in patch 1.05.
Such a mess. How do you include an entire crafting tree and so much random junk loot that people are commenting on the amount of adult toys and useless consumables everywhere, then have a hard cap on file save? It's actually insane how screwed this game is, it was out like 2 weeks and people already hit the limit because duh, of course they did, everything about the game encourages hoarding.
I wouldn't unsub from you for a regular vid for a start i sub to The House of Biscuit no pre-orders here no normal orders either till the real reviews come out and i know what the games really like. Keep up the good work Sid.
I’m 63 hours in, and the file is 4,4 MB in size. and I’ve focused heavily on crafting and collecting. In fact, I have over 30,000 crafting parts collected, of various qualities.
In an attempt to check if I could shrink the savegame file I already have, I disassembled and sold everything, except the crafting materials, I had on me and in my stash.
old file: 4 430 Kb
new file: 4 359 Kb
71 Kb decrease.
I'm going to do the "drop the items in the world and leave for 3 days" thing next I think..
Just got this bug… I didn't do any console command stuff or glitches, just regular play… maybe I got this because I save often.
119 hours in my first playthrough, did every mission, stole everything that wasn't bolted down, maxed out crafting, save file is only 6.3MB. You most definitely don't need to craft anywhere near 6700 items to max out crafting, around level 40 I upgraded all of the iconics I found to legendary and crafted about two dozen legendary weapons (you don't need to level Crafting to unlock legendary recipes, you just need to level up Technical Ability with stat points).
