  1. Looking at comments, I'm happy to say the email/Steam announcement answered the big question. On "getting rid of the written description": "You'll still be able to get at the full set of data within the tabs; the intent of these boxes is to answer simple questions and provide the best flavor and context. The same is true for items, skills, positions and the rest. The full data and options can be found in tabs, with a short summary at the top level."

(Blind complaining about stupid skulls, lol!)

  2. removing the written descriptions of dwarves, of every creature, is outright horrible
i am not even going to consider purchasing the game if this is actually what they are going forward with

  3. Personally I like it, although I've been worried for a while if the game is going to be using static sprites, or if they'll be dynamic.
One of the biggest appeals with Dwarf Fortress is being able to change colorsets on the fly, and likewise being able to color-code and mod things to make it personal.
It'd be disappointing if all dwarves, regardless of if they do or not, just have white skin and brown hair.

For accessibility reasons, and also for my own personal enjoyment of minutea, I prefer the descriptions.

  4. The menu looks surprisingly nice. Toady is great at programming but I never would've expected such nice UI from him. Now just hoping for a dwarf therapist equivalent interface.

  5. I really wish the wooden caskets were casket shaped with the bottom being more thin than the top with that classic 6 sided shape. I think tarn was implying the full text description that we are used to will still be available in a deeper tab

  6. I like this idea of grouping and organizing better the UI, also putting everything into it not requiring player to go through different menus. That said, the implementation wasn’t as cool, I also like the verbal appearance description and the background of the dwarves in form of text. Do you think they are planning to allow you to monitor a dwarf while game is running? Otherwise I would go full screen, like it is now.

  7. I do like the way the dwarven thoughts and mental state and characteristics are displayed in this UI. MUCH less digging through that wall o'text which will be welcome. I love the detail in DF but I think even Toady admits that particular screen is a beast. 🙂

  8. I think they might do it so when you hover over the image of your dwarf it'll display it.
For the classic version, I have no idea how they will add it. We'll see.

I doubt they will remove it though, that seems counter productive.

  9. The skulls on coffins thing might be a visual indication of them being in use
Edit: i really like the new ui and such, it looks really nice which should help in dealing with it, what im really wanting to know is if theyll build in support visually for bearded lady dwarves, since toady went out of his way in showing how to make them bearded in the base game

  10. While we wait for the Steam version, Is there a simple UI mod with mouse controls?
…Or is that horribly too complicated at the moment? Been waiting a few years for this game to be playable.

  11. You people complaining about the old ui seem to be kissing one crucial point. Old ui text ui is playable over SSH on your server, remotely. Keep that in mind. You can play it on your phone with an ssh client. No probs. This graphics stuff better not impede the standard text mode – because honestly, its what got me into dwarf fortress in the first place. Keeping it to the imagination, showing one doesnt need a flashy graphics set to be succesful. And now? The only way to go forward from here with a graphical ui is to keep the old text unharmed. Thats just my 2 cents. All the current version needs is some additional search like in the list of dwarves if one could search by their jobs or description or name, that would make managing larger forts easier in text mode. Little things, some are already somewhat implemented in dfhack. Anyway, good luck to the players and the developers- on keeping this title only better than ever, without sacrificing functionality and quirkiness.

  12. I have a feeling DF classic will just have a ☺ in that box.

I think clicking that box and getting the full text description from there would be an elegant way to do it.

  13. It always took me lot of time to different and knowing my dwarfs…and its impossible once it reach more than 30(to much to differentiate)….This steam version ui and sprite make it easier to know how they look, feel and gender….nice job
