VIDEO CONTENTS:
[0:00] Introduction
[1:09] The yarn
5 gallon bucket with 90 ten gram mini skeins to presoak for 20-30 minutes
[2:00] The dyes
Dharma acid dyes in True Black, Deep Purple, and Dark Navy
Planning a 0.25% DOS of the True Black – 2.25 g of dye for the 900 g of yarn we’re dyeing
[4:06] Cool Vat Dyeing
5 gallon bucket about half full with plain tap water
Add the black dye and 900 g of yarn with no acid yet
*Note: this is the first time I used the 5 gallon bucket to dye yarn. I filmed this video before a lot of the other Chanukah episodes)
Add some vinegar after the yarn is already in the pot
Add 300 mL of white vinegar (a little over 1 cup)
Leave the yarn to slowly absorb for a couple of days
[8:22] 2 days later
reuse the cool vat as a presoak for some yarn mops
[10:22] Dyeing round 2
300 g of yarn in a catering steam pan
Arrange the yarn so the lightest sections are on top
add 6 cups of water
Speckle on (heavy) deep purple, dark navy, and true black
After dyeing the first side, add 3 T of white vinegar (there was already some acid in the yarn itself, but I didn’t add any extra to the bath)
Let sit 15 minutes before flipping
[17:24] Flipping the yarn to dye the other side
Steam set the yarn mops off camera for 20 min in a steamer basket
Add 8 cups of water to the the container
[23:19] Washing the yarn and a MYSTERY!
[26:25] Dyeing more of this colorway
[26:45] The finished dry yarn
[32:02] Conclusions

  1. This was a lot of fun! So glad you didn’t edit out the little” woops “ it is just real life for us all. The gray undertones with the black and purple are so rich and beautiful. This is one I will definitely try at home!

  2. Hey Rebecca! Its me!
I love the way this colour came out. Of course, I would have added some appropriate shade of green! I do see the similarity to the glazing you did the other night. Maybe it would have come out the same if you had have gone with more of the black, but the depth you went tonight was remarkable! So beautiful! It would have been an idea to compare the yarns together from both nights. Maybe you could do that and publish a photo of that comparison?

  3. Yeah, I think 9 skeins in a 5 gallon bucket is probably a bit crowded. I would suggest a large plastic tote, like an 18 gallon one that you can pick up pretty inexpensively at Lowes. I used one for 18 skeins, but felt that it was a bit crowded. I think for 9 – 12 skeins it would be perfect. Having a bucket to help carry the skeins around is still helpful though, as once that tote is filled up, moving it is pretty difficult.

  4. Your navy and black story remind me of when I was younger and was going to a wedding in a navy dress. And I had black shoes and a black purse, which I thought was just fine! My aunt came over to me to whisper that I had put on my black shoes and purse, not navy. She was pretty concerned about it! I just kind of giggled.
