Energy Champions: The CORRECT Way To Design Manaless Champions? | League of Legends

Having talked about Manaless champions and their potential balance implications, I wanted to make a video analyzing Energy Champions in League of Legends, and if they’re the right way to design champions who don’t use mana or have an alternative resource.

  1. i mean like you could make every champ with energy if mana doesnt make any sennse but just giving them no mana or energy at all is kinda busted af + it doesnt rly make any sense too you cant fight forever in a real life situation

  2. "Champions should be balanced around a resource"
Yasuo: Balanced around the fact that W is purely defensive, E does very little damage and R can only be used after a knock-up, meaning his success hinges on careful use of Q, which also needs to be stacked for the knock-up
Yone: Well his Q still stacks, but his W does damage AND shields, his E amplifies all his damage and his ult can be used in any situation and any direction including over walls and has a large enough hitbox to easily grab multiple people.

  3. I really hate energy because you fill it up to max just by standing there, no skill involved in most cases and it virtually has no counterplay when used in combination with some kits such as Zed's for example who also, for probably one of the dumbest reasosn someone has ever thought has an energy regain mechanism which even though in paper is skill based, in reality when you execute it, it's almost guaranteed you are gonna get it so it can be extremely easy to get back more than you need, energy regeneration itself aside.
If this dump af and ultra unbalanced and unfair kit wasn't enough to play against he is practically ungankable in lane party for just being an energy user, all he has to do is to be able to avoid danger and just farm very easily with his passive (another free tool which has no focken cooldown and no skill involved to get its reward other than a simple premise which is completed simply by executing his very easy to do kit) and if needed abilities which you really can't punish him for since he can always escape by keeping flash as a backup because he already has his W<>E to do so before he wasted that and energy obviously makes things so much worse since he can virtually run out of it even if he makes mistakes all he has to do is stand back for a moment and puf he has it all back.
He will push you out of lane and get ahead just because he doesn't have to go back to regenerate unlike mana users, he basically auto-wins lanes vs many mana users just by having energy as a resource, if that isn't broken by default i don't know what is.
God i hate the balance team company so much…the only phrase that fits perfectly for them is: "Hitler would be proud for their work."
    Jesus….

Edit for the people who are gonna jump and say just buy mana items, for energy users it's as if they have your mana items from level 1 so learn some basic objective logic before you try to make an argument.
Energy users, in that regard at least, almost always have the upper hand by default, their mistakes don't really count because of energy!

  4. Energy should only regenerate when an energy user has hit a target with a skill-based ability or in other cases to regenerate slowly but gain some back in the same way, this would require, especially in the first case for one of their abilities to have no cost of course but it would at least made them way more balanced.

  5. Idk what to think about skill expression part. Yeah they will not be able to cast if they have no energy, but so are most of the mages if their abilities are on cd, not to mention how easy it is to hit most of the energy champion abilities.

  6. First, I would enjoy an Udyr mini-rework that gave him energy instead of mana; his current passive incentivizes switching between stances during gameplay, but with mana he will eventually run out without a Tear item that only gives him mana and one stat. Only thing is that the persistent effect also triggers on the first hit after activation, though that might incentivize him to be played more aggressively.

Second, as far as energy mages go, I agree burst mages might be a bad idea, but what about artillery mages or battle mages?

  7. Akali's energy refund on her passive was not technically removed because it was too consistent, it was removed because it created a too big of a skill gap between bad to average and great players, the champion is already too hard to be balanced properly at all elos and to make her viable in lower elos with her passive refund she would basically be a spam machine in the hands of great players

  8. Besides Akali's energy gain, I believe that the skill expression in maintaining and controlling it properly is rather satisfying and let's the champ's skill expression expand

  9. Vlad is good designed, is just hard to noticed. Vlad needs to uses his own life to cast his spells, if you don't use it careful you will end killing yourself.

  10. While she is completely unrelated to Ionia in any way, the way Samira plays makes me think that she's a champion who could use energy very well. Just make her refund mechanic something like landing a melee range q or blocking a projectile with w and then bam, instant energy champ

  11. One thing I didnt notice you mention is how Shen has a MASSIVE 400 energy bar (double the amount of other energy champions) and huge ability costs. It's got the same regeneration rate as other champions but it allows you to throw everything in one big go and have a loooong downtime if you dont want to work around your refund mechanic. I think they allowed him to use all of his kit quickly considering hes the only tank of the group and might have to engage in less than optimal circumstances.
