Epic Mickey – The Game That Could’ve Been

Mickey Mouse is no stranger to games, from his King role in the Kingdom Hearts series to the creative endeavor that is Epic Mickey. When Mickey Mouse was first created he dethroned the current cartoon favorite of the time; Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. So what would happen if there was a game about Mickey Mouse vs Oswald the Rabbit? There’s some interesting copyright history concerning the rights to these characters in the making of this game. Let’s find out in my Epic Mickey review!

Disney Epic Mickey is an action-adventure platforming game for Wii console that sends Mickey Mouse on an epic journey of creativity and discovery. As Mickey, the player is propelled into Wasteland, an alternate world made up of Disney’s forgotten creative efforts, and is given the power to wield paint and paint thinner to dynamically change the world while determining Mickey’s path to becoming an epic hero.

  1. Epic Mickey will always hold a special place in my heart. I've never played the original, (I played the 3ds version but it gets REALLY hard at the end so I didn't finish it) but I read a junior novel on the story, watched all the cutscenes of this game and the second one on youtube, and looked at A LOT of fanart and memes of it back in 2019. This game ignited my passion for old cartoons (which is probably why I love Bendy and Cuphead as much as I do) and made me adore Oswald and now he's my favorite Disney character (other than Figment of course). This serise also introduced me to one of my favorite things in any fictional media ever: Brotherly love. I adore Oswald and Mickey's relationship (at the end of the first game and onward) and this was the first time I had seen love to this extent between 2 characters that wasn't romance (don't come after me shippers). They care about each other so much and they're probably the reason I love Sans and Papyrus, Sonic and Tails, and Frodo and Sam so much (platonicly NOT romanticly).
Sorry if this was a bit long. I had to get this out.

  2. Having played it myself, I think your rating is pretty generous. It's one of the very very few games that I started and never finished. I can count the titles in that category on one hand.

  3. the bad part is whenever i got to the clock tower i could never understand how i could use the paint as a kid and it would frustrate me cause i'd waste hours upon hours on the arms and it's just go splat and sometimes i get so angry i would use thinner instead… i really wished i looked up how to use paint on him back then… i tried his face, his arms, and hands… nothing.

  4. I wish they'd release a 2D platformer based on all the old shorts in the style of somethign like cuphead. They could let you play as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Daisy. It would be so much fun.

  5. Klonoa music plays in background for the platforming section
Jirard: I love video games … and I especially love platformers…

I loved Klonoa! What a great platformer that was!

  6. I remember loaning this from my good friend, played trough it and not liking it. But I gave it a second playtrough and actually enjoyed the game, finally getting it on my shelf.
I think the game should've taken less time to "start off" and way less handholding, and it would've been much better product already. But alas, it came out too soon (which I learned from this video), which really sucks, since that usually means the game loses polish and potential due to lack of time.
    Kinda like Crash Twinsanity.
Both Epic Mickey and Crash Twinsanity need remasters, where the planned yet cut content would be added.

  7. Did… did people have an issue with Gus? Was that a thing?
I mean, I know helper characters are… weirdly hated by a lot of people for some reason, but I've never had an issue with them. Navi, Fi, Gus, they're your friends who stick with you through thick and thin regardless of the inherent danger. I don't know. Maybe I just have a higher tolerance for helper characters than the average Joe or something. Or maybe they're not nearly as bad as everyone says they are.

Or maybe people are just impatient XD

    Epic mickey 2 though?
It may legit be THE best looking Wii game ever released

Really makes you wonder of the missed graphical potential of the wii

  9. This is one of those rare games for me where the world was so creative and engaging that I forgot the game’s problems AS I played it. Even as the Completionist is pointing out valid problems, I’m watching the footage and smiling because I remember that boss fight or zone or enemy and the engrossing feeling of being captivated by Epic Mickey’s world. It may have a sloppy skeleton, but the skin on top makes it one of my favorite games I’ve ever played. Here’s hoping we get a remake someday that polished the bad stuff and keeps the many, many things worth loving about this game.

  10. I didn't know that the bad options where the canon ones… I played both games around the time the second came out so I don't remember everything correctly, but this is something I really didn't know until now… In what part of the second game says it?

  12. I loved Epic Mickey, I HATED Epic Mickey 2, because of the direction they took the story. It felt like they rewarded the players that sped through the game, and punished those that took the time to find everything and get the good ending.

  13. Ever since getting a Wii U during the pandemic I have gone back and started playing more and more OG Wii games – and you know what, a lot of them are good. I was really into my 360 at the time of the Wii and, honestly some of the things the Wii did are really fresh and interesting to me now that I am giving it a fair shot. I am glad to explore it's game library further in the years to come. Good video, I will make a note to check this out at some point.

  14. Before I watch this video, which I'll certainly do. I'm seriously interested in hearing your thoughts on a game like Spec Ops:The Line. It came on 2012, and it's an absolute classic. Not enough people talked, or are talking about this game.

Needless to say, I love your content. Been a fan since 2015.
