When I was in kindergarten, I remember getting off the school bus with my brother James, who was in grade 7 at the time, and all of the other teenagers of the 90’s on that bus. Everyone didn’t go their separate ways, instead they all went to the same place…the corner store, where all the teenagers would line up with their quarters to play Street Fighter 2 Turbo at the arcade all evening until their parents came to look for them (no cell phones back then).
There is nothing in the world that can equal the feeling of those times, I take them with me. That energy is in me for life, in everything I do. To me this is more than just a video game, this is a part of what I identify as my culture – what I grew up with – the best part is that it was a world wide thing. This game brought everyone together, within our neighbourhood 1st, but also across the world. Like I mention in the episode, this game is what introduced me to many of the world’s different cultures.
After being separated from this HUGE part of my childhood, everything has come around full circle. Super Nintendo is without a doubt my favourite video game system and I bought this one on Dec 31st 2020, along with it my top 10 favourite games for it. Thought I’d start off with the 1st game I remember being conscious to witness – Street Fighter 2 Turbo!
P.S – I want to dedicate this episode to my brother James, who I saw with my own eyes when I was 4 or 5, beat the entire game on the hardest level (8 stars) without being hit once – perfect in every round – and he did it with every player – he had the foresight to tape the feat on VHS. Hope he’s still got it cuz I’m sure some people are gonna want to see some proof!
