European Super League news begins 'the biggest poker game' in football history | ESPN FC

Sunday was a big step forward in the potential arrival of a European Super League. Twelve clubs released a unified statement late in the day announcing their intention to begin play in the new competition as soon as possible. The response has been universally negative, with statements from major footballing bodies vehemently condemning the potential league and even threats of players on those teams being barred from national team competitions. ESPN FC’s Gab Marcotti, Nedum Onuoha and Julien Laurens react to the news and examine the impact of a potential Super League.

0:00 The 12 teams currently committed to the competition are: Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus.
0:18 Dan Thomas reads UEFA’s statement cautioning potential entrants into the Super League that they could face banishment from other competitions.
0:59 Marcotti explains why the clubs interested in joining a Super League are not happy with the state of the UEFA Champions League.
3:19 Laurens says talk of a Super League feels different than it has in the past, and Sunday appears to be the start of an intense poker game between the parties involved.
4:47 Onuoha doesn’t think the Super League will happen, but says he’s not against powerful clubs pushing back against footballing bodies like FIFA and UEFA.
6:09 Marcotti says the poker is over, and he assesses what he calls a “philosophical issue” with clubs wanting to remain in their domestic leagues but also play in a breakaway competition.

  1. I am here to emphasis one important point. That is they are big club, okay. But How they became big in 1st place.they won the domestic leagues regularly, showed spectacular performances, lead to more fans came, generating more income, leads to more developments like fantastic stadiums and jersys, video games etc and repeat the cycle.if they refuse to compete in domestic league, thensome other club will be champions, theirfan follower will become higher eventually and they will be big clubbs, simple

  2. Bayern hopefully won't accept and Dortmund as well, as they're are close with the dfb, meaning that the national players will continue to play for the league and Country alongside the 50+1 rule, glad to be a Bundesliga fan

  5. The only hope Now are the players , I hope UEFA and FIFA set strict verdict for all the players that play in this new rubbish tournement as it was talked about like being banned from National competitions like WC. , i don't think then players will risk that , on the other Hand UEFA and FIFA are the most corrupt and they make tons of money so they should find a way to generate more money because the money in this new tournement is ridiculous .

  6. It can only work if the fans cooperate. The owners are not in control. They think they are , but they are not. If no one watches it then no TV money , no sponsors , nothing.

  7. To Nedum's point, do the authorities necessarily want everyone to abandon the Super League clubs? If there's another game in Europe that clubs (and personell) can go to, UEFA/FA/League sanctions no longer deprive the recipients of business (i.e.: what do you mean restraint on trade? The biggest teams are over there). Maybe escalating presents and opportunity here.

Edit: I will also point out that his attitude is what made the Premier League possible, and kickstarted this endless power grab in the first place. Namely, no-one has ever liked EFL as an authority either.

  8. Come to think of it, these clubs give UEFA the largest portion of their revenues
because these are the clubs viewers wants to see so the fact is both parties can't without each other.
Let's say how this plays out

  10. Literally everyone are against this, how do they think it would be financially successful for them? I'm a Real Madrid fan and this is bulshit to me. Preserve the UCL.

  11. I completely agree with the Euroleague basketball point, I think that's the goal at the end of the day and I would be in favor of that because these teams would still have their domestic championships but would participate in a league that would be really exciting to watch
