  1. Yo, I got a great recommendation: A series on YouTube called Interface – fantastic watch, amazing art style… but I know there’s a deeper meaning and only Mat Pat would find it

  3. I imagine your happy place being the location of your first date with your wife would be a little less happy after learning of her infidelity. But hey, I've never been cuckolded nor am I a wife-ghost, what would I know?

  6. After going through Season 1, I'm honestly not sure that Gloria did cheat on Martin with Austin. It's somewhat implied, in Austin's monologue, but that's about as far as it goes outside of Austin and Martin's argument.

I, personally, also can't take anything about their relationship without heaping doses of skepticism because the narration isn't reliable. If it's truly being told through Martin's perspective, then there's a lot more to it than that. A major theme brought up at first with Banzo and repeated with his kids is the idea of getting rid of 'annoyances' that won't allow him to 'focus' on his work.

The marionette and the dummy are perfect examples of this, because it's specifically stated that the dummy ONLY speaks when spoken to because the son would ask over and over again to play with the toys Austin made. The marionette sings herself songs because the daughter would ask him to sing for her constantly.

My take, then, is similar, but a little bit different.

Martin is- or was- a man under stress of losing a company. Similar to your theory, I think that he did take criticism poorly. However, instead of learning in a healthy way, he became obsessive. Stressed beyond his mind and terrified of losing everything he'd worked for, Martin poured himself into his work to make the 'perfect toy'. However, nothing he did was ever considered perfect, and he struggled to get his company off the ground, despite even selling his soul to the devil. His desperation worsened as he began to push away his friends and family. From the toy maker, we learn that he doesn't do much self-reflecting, and is quick to cast blame on others, especially children. His anger came to a boiling point as he began to abuse his children, who Martin considered nuisances and problems. Gloria, desperate, turns to Austin for help, but Martin in his obsession and anger doesn't see what's going on. Assuming that Gloria is cheating on him, Martin kills his entire family.

This storyline fits better in my head because it doesn't make sense for Gloria to cheat and then beg for Martin to come to his senses. Atop of that, Martin being symbolized as a clown or jester also begins to make more sense. Clowns are not only often lumped with evil due to recent cultural events, but they can also be seen as tragic figures. They represent chaos and disorder, just as much as they can represent fun and whimsy, which is what can make them seem so creepy. Martin sees himself as a laughingstock, but also knows deep down there's something wrong with him.
