Friday Night Funkin’ (often abbreviated to FNF) is an open-source rhythm game first released as a demo in 2020 for a game jam. The game is developed by a small group called The Funkin’ Crew Inc., with the four founding members being the Newgrounds users Cameron “ninjamuffin99” Taylor, David “PhantomArcade” Brown, Isaac “Kawai Sprite” Garcia, and evilsk8r. The game shares some gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper and borrows aesthetic influences from Flash games. The game has been credited with driving users back to Newgrounds, a site whose popularity peaked in the early 2000s.

The game mainly revolves around the player character, Boyfriend, who must defeat a variety of characters in singing and rapping contests in order to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. Gameplay revolves around hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song.

The game was initially created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam on October 5, 2020. An expanded demo was released on November 1, 2020, with updates being released in the following months. A full version backed on Kickstarter titled Friday Night Funkin’: The Full Ass Game is currently in development.

  1. I rarely comment in any video and I'm late but… wow! This one is the best E.X.E music I ever listened!! You and Kelpy did an amazing job at the metal sonic part, clearly my favorite!
(Sorry if my English is bad, I'm still learning so I would love if anyone correct me)

  2. Am I going insane, or does Sonic.exe have a deep voice behind his main voice whenever he talks?
It doesn't show up until his eyes go black in the beginning, and it isn't in Metal Sonic's voice either

  3. This is hella underrated. I loved the animation when it first came out, and I'll be real, wasn't expecting a lot going in, but there wasn't one line where you dropped the ball. Every rhyme was impeccable and the consistency was astonishing! The only thing I could even critique was the effect on the voice made it a little hard to parce what he was saying, but it helped make it sound more ominous. Plus, that's what subtitles are for XD

    A+ tier cover, 4.8/5

  4. Something I noticed at the beginning is (and I don't know if this was intentional or not) the anti-piracy is a great reference to the sonic pc port demo. For those who don't know, after lord X kills tails (or at least some point after) the game crashes and your given an anti-piracy screen. Your also given a text document on your desktop and every time you read it, the sonic on the anti-piracy screen get angrier and angrier till the window just closes and you can't open the game again. It really cool you referenced that. It also cool how instead of an fnf song with lyrics, this is an actual, original song. Great job! I hope to see more stuff like this!
