Firearms Expert Reacts to Escape From Tarkov’s Guns

Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the realistic weaponry of Escape From Tarkov, including the Makarov pistol, the FN P90 submachine gun, and the AK 101 assault rifle.

Escape From Tarkov is a brutally realistic take on the first person shooter genre, and its fictional region of Norvinsk is full to the brim contemporary firearms like the M4A1 carbine, the AS Val rifle, the SV-98 sniper rifle, and KS23 shotgun.

In the above video, Jonathan Ferguson–a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries–breaks down the weapons of Escape From Tarkov, and compares their in-game depictions against their real-world counterparts.

  1. Tarkov has loads of weapons so obviously we couldn't cover them all in one episode!
So Tarkov fans let us know what weapons you want Jonathan to cover next, and if you're lucky we may do a follow up episode!

(and yes I totally recorded this gameplay in offline mode because I DON'T HAVE THAT MANY ROUBLES TO WASTE META M4s AND AS VALS OKAY?!)

  2. He seemed to forget that the army uses SLUGS for shotguns. He's talking about bird shot all the way through when there is shotgun involed. Like why the F would the ARMY use BIRD SHOT in combat?? I'm surprised he even mentioned birdshot… The army uses SLUGS or something similar to buck shot, ''human shot''. I made up human shot but It's basicly the same thing. I don't even have a fkn clue about the military, everything i know about the army is from COD and Battlefield. And EVEN I KNOW about slugs…

  3. You CAN see the other round a little bit to the side in MP5's magazine in Tarkov, It wasn't a single column. Truthfully, most irl MP5 mags would make it more obvious… About every magazine that you can (in real life) count the rounds that are left inside still – you can in Tarkov. I found this out thanks to the in-game model of M9 magazine… Where on the back of it, there are holes, with numbers under them, and you can see the primers in the correct places, depending on how fully loaded it is. I believe on the aluminum and bakelite ak mags, there is a hole in the middle or so…

If you check in-game how much ammo you got left in the mag, on some weapons (Magazines, more like) you can get a precise number, like the M9 beretta pistol, while on the ak mags, you can only tell if there is more or less than half, or if it's almost empty.

  4. There are dev blogs with videos where the tarkov devs show how they make the audio design. They record the actual weapons. You can see them shooting them in various environments. You cant expect that kinda love for a game anymore these days.

  5. I've made similar claims about the recoil in Tarkov being slightly off on both ends, what I mean by that is that un-modded weapons tend to have recoil that is exaggerated compared to real life, like what we see with the AK here having substantially more muzzle-rise than you would expect, especially considering the player character is supposed to be a trained PMC. On the other end, weapons with top-end attachments/parts seem to have unrealistically LOW recoil, with M4's/HK-416's and even 7.62 NATO rifles like the FAL being capable of laser-beam accuracy on full-auto. The 5.45 AK's with the stock muzzle device are a perfect example, that muzzle device is incredibly effective and the 5.45 is already a tame cartridge to begin with.

  6. Maybe he should look over Halo
While it's weapons may not be real, similar principals apply to weapons like the MA5 Assault Rifle and BR55 Service Rifle, and even something like the Type 51 Covenant Carbine

  7. The video was good, but the guy didn't know that the KS-23 had a slug round called "Barricade" and bear in mind that the KS-23 was originally used as a carbine, it even had a scope, so it is not unusual for the KS-23 to be used at 100m range

  8. Makarov drum mags are definitely a real thing. Ive plenty of pictures of russian police using them. Why? Most likely they are issued only makarovs and are stuck using them, so they decide to upgrade their firepower with aftermarket drums. You dont see them outside of russia.

  9. Team fortress 2 lol.
I want to hear a rant about how a rocket launcher irl has:
    No recoil
Probably can’t hold 4 rockets at once.
And the scattergun you don’t add new rounds you just remove old ones
