Each game console of the 90s had its main character. Dendy had Mario, Super Nintendo had Donkey Kong, and the main character of 16-bit Sega was, of course, a speedy hedgehog named Sonic. It is about interesting facts about Sonic that we would like to tell you today.

1. Sonic was not the first mascot (symbol) of the Sega console. Before him, there were several other characters, who, however, quickly merged. And when the bosses began to think about a new talisman, they reviewed a huge number of proposed options, and eventually settled on four. Well, as you already understood, it was the high-speed hedgehog that became Sega’s mascot. Although, a funny mustachioed man also came in handy. He was remade a little, and so the main antagonist Dr. Eggman (Robotnik) appeared.

4. Sonic first appeared not in his own game “Sonic the hedgehog” (1991), but in the arcade racing game “Rad mobile”, which was released a few months earlier. True, he does not appear there as a character, but dangles inside the car in the form of a toy.

5. The same sound we hear when Sonic curls up into a ball, as well as the sound of braking, were taken from the arcade racing game “Outrun” (1986).

6. Enthusiasts calculated the approximate maximum speed of Sonic. Knowing his height (1 meter), the length of 1 act in pixels and the time of the fastest passage of 1 act (24 seconds), it is easy to calculate Sonic’s height in pixels and compare all these dimensions. As a result, the average speed of Sonic was approximately 15 meters per second, taking into account obstacles. Without obstacles, the speed could reach 20-25 meters per second. But even with such a speed, Sonic could not overcome the sound barrier, although according to the developers, he could do it.

7. In the original version of the game in the first act, there was supposed to be a movable ball that Sonic could push and crush enemies with it. But the ball was removed from the final version, or rather, it was left as a fixed element.

8. Sonic has always been considered an environmentalist and advocated a healthy lifestyle with sports. But nevertheless, ashtrays and lighters with the image of Sonic calmly went out on the market. Moreover, it was the official related products from SEGA.

9. In 1993, the American technology magazine “Wired” named Sonic the person of the year, placing him on the cover of the December issue.
