Ford's All-Electric Version F-150 Could Be A Game Changer

Rachel Maddow reports on the immense popularity of the Ford F series pick-up trucks, and particularly the F-150, which is set to be released in an all-electric version. If the electric F-150 is a success, its popularity could make the difference in normalizing electric vehicles in the U.S. and begin the phase-out of gas-powered vehicles.

  1. It's really a RIVIAN truck with a Ford body on it. Amazon and Ford gave RIVIAN $500,000,000 & $800,000,000. Not sure which gave what. I had put down $1,000 on a RIVIAN back in 2018. Really sweet!

  2. Once people find out how expensive it is to replace the battery only the rich will be interested. When it costs more to buy a battery than another truck people will realize they cannot afford these.

  3. Do your research. Electric vehicles towing sucks. Also in cold weather the batter life diminishes quickly because batteries can't generate heat as an engine can. Combustibles are not going no were until they can figure out how to recharge a battery as fast as gasing up. If you take long road trips it is going to take you twice as long because you have to find a charging station and hang around for a few hours to charge up.

  4. For actual working pickups this could be huge. There are farms where the truck rarely if ever leaves the property and having some sort of fuel tankage on site is a major pollution source. Switching the truck, and eventually the tractor, to electric or plug in hybrid would eliminate or greatly reduce the need for fuel on the farm. The same for trucks on construction sites and who knows how many other jobs.

Even tradesmen might like them. They don't drive far enough to really use up the full range of the truck in a day and they have all that power sitting there so hopefully Ford makes outlets available like they do in the hybrid.

  5. Not a big fan of how Rachel Maddow delivers her stories but this was a well written story with a good point.

We are at a turning point where EVs will become more capable and in the near future, cheaper than their ICE counterparts. That alone will drive the EV revolution. There is no need for government mandates on ICE vehicles.

There only need to be some investment in battery development and manufacturing to get us where we need to be.

  6. The only downside to electric vehicles is the range if you want to do long distance driving. But, that would be easily fixed if the manufacturers could come together and agree on 1 style of battery pack and make it an ISO standard. This would allow for creation of batteries that are hotswappable. IE: you pull up to a station, and you exchange the battery like you do a propane tank and pay a fee for the capacity you purchased.

  7. Like most sports car guys, I thought electrical vehicles were limp-wristed frou-frou cars until I saw a stock Tesla show up at our local drag way on a packed Saturday night. It absolutely smoked a heavily modded C06 Corvette by over 70 feet. I think the entire crowd was in shock how fast electric cars are; instant full AWD power off the line so quick it almost looks fake.

  8. Well Rachel, typically you are on point but one thing you apparently missed were the issues with the aluminum body twisting. It was a big issue and a lot of owners had this happen, so yes there is a big downside to the aluminum.
