Fortnite Imposters is a blatant, shameless Among Us ripoff

Fortnite Imposters was just announced, and it’s immediately apparent what a shameless ripoff of Among Us this is. InnerSloth doesn’t claim ownership of social deduction mechanics. But there was very clearly a line crossed, with a refusal to collaborate, and themes and terminology stolen straight from Among Us.

Please watch the whole video! I do try to put a positive spin on things, and open up some larger conversations. I don’t want a witch hunt against Fortnite or Epic Games. They have a lot of good to offer! But they REALLY fumbled this one, and need to know that we expect better.

  1. Sharing a tweet from Joe Tirado (staymighty) I came across that sums up an important distinction here that many people seem to be missing.
"Saying β€œaMoNg Us WaSnT fIrSt” is a bad take:

Among us is inspired by Mafia but adds brand new mechanics (emergency meetings, tasks, cameras, 3D, no moderator & a lot more)

Imposters is a reskinned remake that reuses most of the SPECIFIC features that Among Us introduced."

So yes, there is room for more social deduction games. As many as the market will tolerate. That's for the collective playerbase to decide, not me. I never argued against that.
Among Us also wasn't the first. I never claimed that either. They took the genre in a new direction, and with no small amount of luck, made it big!

I simply wish Epic made some effort to add something new to the genre, rather than pulling straight from Among Us. It doesn't matter that this is a lore-based event in Fortnite. They knew what they were doing.
The quality of their new game mode also doesn't matter here. It was lazy and disrespectful to attempt to simply reskin Among Us, and add SO little to it.
It doesn't matter that they aren't charging money for it. It's still a cash grab to so closely imitate another popular game, and stand on the heads of those developers, for Epic's own benefit at the detriment of InnerSloth's hard work.
And the last common point I've been seeing. Yes, Fortnite had a mode like this once already. That was fanmade, and existed as a showcase of the community and should not be held to the same standards. If you cannot see the distinction of why fangames can be forgiven for imitation, while a billion dollar developer is scrutinized for it, than I cannot help you.

  2. I've tried to develop games, I want to be an indie-dev. And the motivation to work is so hard to get so I have a major respect toward Indie-devs like Inner Sloth, Landfall, Concerned Ape, Team 17, They are all amazing same with some of the best AAA companies that aren't major cash grabbers like, Valve and Nintendo… (in the past, Nintendo has been a jerk lately). But this? is awful! I already didnt like Epic for stealing dances, the huge crunch on their employees (100 hour work weeks). They never listen to the community, like Halloween zombies nobody liked them, and what did they do after Halloween? Made the zombies blue and put them in at Christmas time. Because blue makes them different enough to add again. they also keep adding bots that litterally everybody hates. And the 10$ worth of V-bucks for Skins that took maybe a day to make. This is the last straw, I'm going to uninstall Fortnite, and I'd advise you do the same. They are huge jerks.

  3. Imma be honest all fortnite was take the basic concept possibly take 1 or 2 of the tasks from among us and take the name of the guys who kill you other than that its kinda original (ps. I think Infiltrators would have been a better name than imposters)

  4. I like the game mode as it is based off of the story line that is taking place in Fortnite. Agent Jones was destroying the IO from within the Order itself, and implies that there is more than just Jones working against then in this crisis going on with the aliens. That is what differentiates the two games for me.

  5. You can tell Epic spent a while developing this mode, and they DID put their own spin on it. It is quite different. There's no reason to hate on them, just let them be. At the end of the day, Among Us will always be bigger than Impostors.

  6. At least the double agent mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a Inspiration of TTT and Among Us with a Detective and weapons it’s like a Among Us with a COD Twist on it but Fortnite Imposters mode is just Among Us. No Twist, No New Roles.

  7. As someone who generally keeps tabs on what's going on which each party in this situation, none of the dev team (That I know of), have even reacted to the whole debacle. Which makes me question whether or not the fortnite battle royal mode has different teams for different aspects, which would make such a sudden gamemode like this make more sense. If the team responsible for game modes that change up the style for a limited time just recently decided to do this, as a few leaks would imply, then I wouldn't be surprised no collab happened, because the collab team was likely busy with both Ariana Grande's event and other collabs pre-establish months prior.

I'm not saying Epic isn't in the wrong here, but I'm willing to give the company a benefit of the doubt. While I think they should've held off on releasing this game mode, to at least talk with the Devs of Among us, it's possible their work on the game mode had to be released to meet a quota. Either way, it's a sad sight to see.

And to get a bit off topic, even among critics in the community of fortnite and epic games, I've only seen positive reactions. Everyone understands the same as the rest of the public, but to players of fortnite, this was a breath of fresh air, something to help switch up the occasionally monotony which often plagues the game.

In short, I wished this was all handled better. And I hope Epic Games considers rectifying their mistake and give the Among Us Devs some proper recognition on their biggest game yet.

  8. I play fortnite so sorry if my you hate my opinion. Fortnite is a fun game to me the imposter game mode is also fun but saying it's a straight RIP off that's my problem there is a lot of differences between among us and the new mode. The impostors ltm has a lot of lore in the mode for fortnite now you probably did not play the new mode but if you did you would see the lore and the differences. But that's just my opinion.
