Genre: 16-bit FM-synth chiptune cover (PMD98)

Pixel-art sprites & logo commissioned to AuroraArtz

Two versions:
① 0:00 – PC-9801 Version (Yamaha YM2608/OPNA only)
② 1:48 – PC-9821 Version (Yamaha YM2608/OPNA + 2× Burr-Brown PCM61P/86PCM)

All versions use FM instrument patches from KAJA’s EFFEC.FF voicebank, supplied with PMD98 version 4.8O. Synth bass is @026 SynBass, sometimes layered with @064 SynBass (& initially SSG) for deeper bass; synth pads are @016 Syn, layered with SSG; the lead synth played during the chorus sections (the “Bo-Pee-Bo” parts) is @097 Chorus; drums are a mixture of the usual K/R SSG & RSS presets, with SSG-only @4096 preset as a stand-in for the “vinyl scratch”.
Version ① is an FM+SSG-only version where the “vocal” melodies are played by two alternating FM patches: @245 Chorus for Daddy Dearest (with AR envelope parameter [for attack rate] manually increased via OPNA register manipulation) & @252 POrgan for Boyfriend. The choir “Heys” are played by SSG portamentos. This version was recorded from the hoot emulator. AuroraArtz’s sprites & logo were manually reduced to 15 colors by me & layered onto my background tiles (which provide the 16th color) & text-based instrumentation panel (HUD, which provides 4 extra colors from a separate 8-color text palette independent from the chosen 16-color graphics palette) to simulate a PC-9801 EGC screenshot.
Version ② is an FM+SSG+PCM version where the “vocals” & “heys” above have been replaced by 8-bit/16kHz downsamplings of Kawai Sprite’s original VOX & drum stems (published on his Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/kawaisprite/status/1358233834332934147), software-mixed in stereo via the PPZ8 PCM driver. This frees up one FM channel for an extra layer of @026 SynBass (at a lower octave) during the chorus sections, as well as allowing the SSG synth pads from the 1st chorus to be trailed by lower-volume “echoes” alongside the first “hey”; also, @097 Chorus’s AR, SR, & RR parameters (for attack, sustain, & release rates) were manually increased via register edits. This is the version that was recorded from a NEC PC-9801-86 soundcard, and the version that shows AuroraArtz’s sprites in their original 40-color glory in an attempt to simulate a screenshot from a 32-bit NEC PC-9821 in its exclusive 256-color graphics mode.
Tools used:
SlashIDE (IDE) 1.0.0.1, an MML editor/compiler GUI developed by AxeBane “on a whim” (based on a custom Win64 port of KAJA’s PMD98 version 4.8R, “ruined by” him)
hoot… – Sound Hardware Emulator 1.0.0.1 (20191231 build)
NEC PC-9821Xa7 (equipped with PC-9801-86)

Audacity 2.3.1
Wavosaur 1.7.0.0
