Hollow Knight’s gameplay focuses heavily on exploration, platforming, and combat. Players explore a large interconnected world using a variety of combat moves and techniques. In the different scenarios you can find details that tell the story of Hallownest, such as stones with writings, particular objects, etc. In classic metroidvania fashion, there are areas of the world that players cannot access until they have obtained a particular item or ability. Maps for each zone must be purchased from Cornifer, the cartographer, who is usually hidden in that area, and the player can also purchase upgrades that allow markers to be placed on the map, or reveal parts of the map as they explore. The save of the game can only be done in the rest benches that are scattered throughout the kingdom. Sitting on a bench will update the map with the Knight’s recently discovered areas, in turn regenerating his health in case he has lost it.
