Gatekeeping of hobbies such as sports, video games, computers and movies! Let's talk about it.

welcome back everyone to another discussion with this guy trucks! today I want to discuss people that gatekeep hobbies and try to prevent other people from having fun. sometimes it’s difficult to enjoy a movie or video game or sporting event without someone explaining to you why you don’t have enough knowledge to enjoy a hobby. today we will discuss what ever happened to people just having fun with new hobbies.

  1. @thisguytrucks I started watching your videos a couple of months ago because I was interested in the trucking industry (I'm on week 2 of trucking school btw), but I mainly watch because you're a great story teller and mention things I've thought about subconsciously but never analyzed well enough to talk about, such as the whole gatekeeping thing and people who speak in acronyms all the time. I know it annoys me anytime I'm forced to partake in these conversations, but I don't know what it is about the conversation that makes me uncomfortable. I have never heard anybody address it before watching your videos, so I thought I was the only one.
Btw there's a super trucker in my class lmao. He's a student too, so he doesn't have his CDL yet and drives like shit but has that super trucker mentality. I was partnered up with him and it takes every ounce of energy in me not to knock him unconscious

  2. Hello Josh . I think the gatekeepers are set in their way & it you don't see it their way then you're wrong . I love your trucking streams . The American truck simulator is great & when you tried Showrunner it was different , but I got interested in it . I found a channel that has snowRunner mp . It's so much fun listening to their cb's and their teasing of each other .. Thank you for your channel .. Sorry for my long comment .. Please keep your videos & steams coming , I missed the live stream yesterday when you bought your lowboy . Then Peter took it . To bad you can't sit the drivers down and have meeting ..
Josh are you able to doll your truck up any ?? Take it to the I – 80 truck shop ..

  3. Excellent points all around. I managed to get my own head out of that space, because somebody gate-kept ME on something and I realized how shitty it was. The mentality of 'you can't just enjoy a thing, you have to disect it and pull out its viscera and see all the inner workings and nobody can enjoy it who does not fully dive in' is just a form of intellectual snobbery, and as other commenters have said, it sucks the joy from hobbies and interests and all kinds of subjects.

Enjoy life. We only get one and it's too short to be wasted on such frivolities. And I'm not saying DON'T dive in deep. By all means if you enjoy that (and I do, on some topics) then by all means enjoy yourself. But don't SHIT on other people for not wanting to do that while they also enjoy a thing you do.

  4. Mountain biking is this way. In some circles if you don't ride a $5k carbon full squish, or aren't sending big jumps, you aren't a real mountain biker.

Can't just take an entry level hard tail and go enjoy the trails. Nope nope, and God forbid you get a pedal assist ebike…

  5. My main hobby is fishing. Im always willing to give out tips and advice to anyone who asks whether new to the game or an old salt. Hobbys bring joy to people. Anyone who would try to take that from someone is an ass hat.

  7. Toxic geek culture. Nerd culture. I've seen it since the BBS days. People are a lot more abrasive, rude, and annoying when they have the insulation of the screen between them and others.

  8. I appreciate you going into details about Mr know it all type attitudes. I’ve also notice an increase of this maybe smartphones might have some correlation? I think we are experiencing a breakdown of human interaction on a large scale. Thanks for the video.

  9. It's annoying how folks gatekeep hobbies. I've dealt with assholes like that. For example, I'm not allowed to be a black woman, who likes heavy metal and they act like I have to know a band's entire discography and every band member past and present just to prove how much a fan I am. These folks are the reason why r/gatekeeping exists.
