  1. Disclaimer, points I missed and timestamps

❗️This is an opinion piece designed to explore a topic alongside evidence. It is not an invitation to send any hate or negativity to those mentioned. Any opinions stated are my own and viewers are encouraged to do their own research to come to their own conclusions.

📝 Further points: The Barbara fan club, in particular Albert, are portrayed as weird and are supposed to highlight Barbara’s flaws of being naive and too nice. I don’t think they’re there and shown in a positive light. I also don’t think Albert /wants/ Barbara that way, he’s got a strong infatuation with her as a performer. He’s a die hard fan and yes that can be ~creepy~ but like a lot of the fans he’s just super into her music. It’s meant to parallel the real world and fan culture. As for Diona, I don’t know too much about her story so I can’t comment.

  2. i can 100% see why people would want to spread info on this, IF IT WAS THE FULL GAME. God im so fucking tired of twitter, and im not black or indigenous or anything so take this all with a massive grain of salt. So if i make an animal do a funky dance, and then coincidentally it looks similar to a dance of someone else, im racist? To be fair i havent been shown the similarities, but seriously Hilichurls literally rob/kill people. they are not meant to be seen as good, they are just literal animals. As far as i know the creators have said nothing about this, so they are just assuming shit and rolling with it?? argrggagrgrGRGGR!!!

And i feel like half the people criticizing it havent even played the game!! its not out all the way yet!! theres so much more characters that come out often. And the creators are chinese. while that of course is not an excuse to be racist, they do not have the same culture as Americans. They Most likely do not see people of multiple races/colors often.

Idk if people are genuinely mad over the Flora thing, but it is so obviously a mistake on the devs part?? so its just so stupid to get mad over, just say "hey this thing is sorta creepy, were you meant to change it" and be done with it.

Fucking hell twitter makes me so angry. I only go on it like every 2 months, but everytime i do it makes me want to just rip my skin off.

  3. I'm Alaskan Native (Iñupiaq, a type of Inuit). I don't see anything wrong with the indigenous stuff, considering it's not directly based off of indigenous cultures in real life? Like, what else is there? Are actual fashions and languages taken? The dance, to me, is vague because all Indigenous dancing are vaguely similar looking to the naked eye.

They SHOULD fix the wording, imo. I'm a writer and there's just a lot better words to use that don't sound cliché. lol

  4. i know i must sound ignorant but why is it important for a certain race/ character trait/ nationality/color etc to be "represented" . like i would play all the games with lets say black characters just because the story is good. i dont think i should "relate" to the characters. its not real life, its just a game

  5. I’m not a part of any of the offended groups, but I do know a lot about the lore so I might be able to offer a different perspective? For darker skin tones, there are two nations coming. One is Sumeru, based on the Middle East/India. The other is Natlan, the Pyro nation based on civilizations such as the Aztecs. Then the hilichurls. It’s been heavily implied that the hilichurls aren’t the bad guys. Many believe they are the people from Kaeya’s home nation which is why he can speak the hilichurls language, that have been turned into monsters by the gods for forsaking them. It has also been implied that hilichurls aren’t inherently bad, as you have certain commission quests where you speak to them and read them poetry. It is believed that the hilichurls are influenced by the Abyss and Abyss mages, who also speak hilichurl, to act against the protagonist. Basically, hilichurls might not be the bad guys. Definitely doesn’t absolve them of wrongdoing, but it gives perspective on why they’d think it’s ok to include the dance

  6. Great video! I’m part Indian and Genshin impact shouldn’t be cancel. Genshin impact just used a dance and that’s it. These people are just a bunch of 14 year old girls trying to cancel something for no reason! It’s not racist to use a Indian dance or so on, it’s a dance! They could used a Caucasian dance would that be racist? People just want to find a way to cancel something that’s all. Great video again! Hilichurls we’re humans that got turned evil by some power in genshin if they played the game they would know that.

Ik your video was about something else but the trolls in genshin started this whole cancel thing. I’m basically 100% Indian and genshin shouldn’t get cancelled for this.

  7. While I agree with some of your points, the whole Kaeya being labeled as exotic still bothers me. As a poc I’ve also been labeled as exotic by white people solely because I’m a poc. It also just bothers me because the traveler character or even dainsleif who is from the same place as Kaeya aren’t labeled as exotic despite also being from somewhere else. The whole Kaeya and Xinyan controversy also needs to open up a larger conversation about coloring darker skin because it’s often really gray in anime

  8. This makes me a bit sad because, and I will say I am white so I don't really have much a say in any of this, but I adore Chinese culture and have studied it for a while (mainly the historic stuff but some modern) so it made me excited to see a large amount of asian representation specifically being Chinese in this game. It also has allowed me to educate some of my other friends on how to pronounce some things or even how some things they say are definitely offensive and it's made my friend group a lot more understanding. Not to mention, with the whole spikey round boy thing, it's nice to see a bunch of positive Chinese representation because it helps a lot of people see that hey, maybe Chinese people don't suck and aren't to blame for this.

  9. An important thing to remember is that nothing can represent every category. There are white, black, latino, middle-eastern, asian, indigenous people, etc. And then there are 20-30 more categories within those categories. And that's just regarding ethnicity
Adding in sexuality, gender identities, disabilities and religions, how do you expect one thing to have representation for all of that?

  10. I don't think Genshin Impact should be cancelled, some of the stuff is kinda weird though.

The things said about the hilichurls and the dance make me kind of uncomfortable, I think that they should just change the dance. Since I'm not indigenous I don't have a lot to say about this though.

I also find it a bit sad that there aren't any black characters that are just regular people, but it makes sense in canon and they'll probably add them in eventually.

In general, I think that both the people trying to cancel Genshin and the people saying that this is complete bullshit are wrong because some of the concerns really are valid, but by far not cancel worthy.

guess this makes me a genshin impact centrist lmao

  11. Teyvat is representative of Eurasia, most of the 7 regions have been already listed. Mondstadt is Germany, Liyue is China, Sznechnaya (?) is Russia, Inazuma is Japan, and the other regions have been mentioned (I could find the list somewhere, might be the wiki). It is similar to how Avatar the Last Airbender is also meant to represent different Asian regions. While I agree that a lot of the characters in genshin are pale, it is primarily EURASIA. I would like to see more tan people and tan Asians, though I'm not sure if a lot of black people or a whole black region will be brought in due to the region being primarily based on Eurasia. Mihoyo wants to show the world the beauty in CHINA, especially in one of the most recent events the Lantern Festival. They're trying to represent who they are and what they know, and I don't know if they could develop fully fleshed out African, Nordic, or Hispanic regions well in Genshin due to that focus on Eurasia.

As for the Hilitruls(?) dance, there's actually a really cool theory circulating as to where the hilitruls came from. I'm not sure if I am going to be able to word it properly, but it involves Albedo, Kaeya, Durin (Dragonspine Dragon), and Kaeya's homeland Khaenri'ah.

From what I recall, we know about Khaenri'ah was an underground city based around alchemy, but alchemy Teyvat hasn't seen. All the names are slipping my mind, but it is theorized that Albedo and Durin were made by one of the alchemists there, and corrupted by another. Khaenri'ah fell due to the corrupt alchemy of this alchemist, and Kaeya was sent as a last hope to train in Mondstadt and return as their savior(? uncertain if he was meant to return. it was for "ancient plot"). I dug around for the post that words it a lot better here https://www.instagram.com/p/CM1E5JDAySx/?igshid=72r7in8egvu2 .

This theory also holds the idea that the Abyss order and hilitruls hail from Khaenri'ah, but were corrupted in the incident. It would depend if the Khaenri'ah region is based of indigenous Southeast Asian tribes (similar to how in ATLA the Southern water tribe is based on a real Asian tribe), but that may be where they came from. If that's the case, I would be extremely excited to see the indigenous region within Genshin.

It doesn't defend the dances insensitivity, but from previous research and detailing I have seen in Genshin (AR 55, I have walked around a LOT), I would like to think that there is a source for these dances that will become relevant later. As stated in the video though, we cannot judge the game until its completion, and the Kaenri'ah region would likely be end game plot considering its ties to Dainsleif and perhaps Celestia.

    – a POC in the media industry. I've made peace with the fact that Genshin may not hold representation for hispanics, black, or other ethnicities because it is region-based and holds a lot of representation for ASIANS (which I am very happy to see). I would be impressed if they managed to add more representation, but I don't have my hopes that high.

  12. Hey indigenous ojibwe person here! IMO the idea of basis a bunch of characters who are coded as native and having them act as “savage” violent people is incredibly racist on its own. I personally have no beef with non-indigenous people making indigenous coded ocs/non humans, but the unfortunate truth is a lot of them only use our cultures as a way to show how exotic and “primitive” they are instead of giving us actual representation. I don’t agree with boycotting genshin since it will do absolutely nothing, but instead giving money/support to other indigenous/poc creators but that’s just my take.

  13. I'm somewhat mixed

I can see that some people are just trying to cancel the game for the sake of cancelation but I think some of the POcs criticizing the wording or treatment of ingenious culture

Plus I get it's fiction and developing but representation is important, whether you think so or not. Representation can shape how minorities are viewed and as "pathetic" it be may seem some minorities would like to see themselves in a character. Yes they should be fully fleshed out characters with a place in the plot

I guess to combat the Hilichurl would to have a indiegous characters

I dunno the emote seemed a bit like cultural appropriation, imo and that's a whole other conversation

I think boycotting is a bit far, but I think criticizing the game is of course good, especially of fans as long it's not nitpicking

I do appreciate the grand Chinese representation and representing a blasian character

I don't play the game and only belong to the dark skin group (which I don't personally feel offended but I can understand the skin color argument) , so take my words with a grain of salt :/

  14. Fun fact there is a region in Genshin impact called Sumeru which will be based on Indian and Egyptian culture as well (Sumeru is what Buddhist call the sacred mountain mount meru)

We have not yet discovered that regions characters yet so keep an eye out for that. Every region is inspired from a culture (Monstadt is German based and Liyue is of course Chinese based) .

  15. Twitter is a cesspool and encourages outrage and narcissicm. All of these points can be summed up as "and i took that personally". These people are living a delusion, thinking every little thing is about them and their "identity". Im thankful that asian devs usually dont fall into the twitter trap and dont pander to these lunatics.

  16. I feel like asking for representation is enabling tokenism. If a game doesn't represent you then you should just stop playing it. It's a Chinese game, Asians are also in the minority and their representation shouldn't be taken away. They have creative freedom and they can design characters as they like.

  17. I respect your patience with being diplomatic, but this fake outrage is just hilarious. It's a clear ploy for "indigenous" people (scammers and pretenders) on the internet to demand free sh*t and i'm not afraid to call it as i see it, and i see it in the comments as well, which is a shame. Have some pride in your culture…. a.k.a. don't demand charity/pity.
Also the game is a work of fiction.
Also darker asian people also exist, tan skin does not instantly mean black.
