Always F5 before taking quest or placing buildings so you can reload after messing the build location or get quest there is no change of completing.
Farmer looks after your animals field worker ploughs the field gathers the crops etc

All gathered materials goes into storage logs etc as you know into the storage shes. Food stuff is gathered and put into the food storage.

The field worker works the fields (plants, harvests, etc). The farmer works in the barn threshing, etc.

Make the new girl a field worker , she will take care of your crops, also she does not need to manure or tools.
Slip like others have said the field worker is the one who does the sowing and planting. Make sure to hit F5 (quick save) Before you talk to anyone about a quest. There are many you will not be able to complete and you don't want to lose those valuable Rep points, also your villagers dont use any fertilizer or seeds…those you use if you are doing the farming yourself
