Full Testing Details
• All testing was conducted by myself and after the Cayo Perico Heist DLC, meaning all platforms were running the same version before next gen enhanced editions were released (PS5, PS4 Pro and PS4 were all running the PS4 version of the game for example).
• Loading conditions were made as equal as possible (loading into the apartment online for example).
• Timers start and footage is synced to when the button is pressed to initially launch the game or online session, and stops as soon as any in game character animation is displayed. An extra 2 seconds is added to the footage for video purposes, but the time does not take this into account.
• All platforms had the game installed digitally. None utilised discs.
• All platforms were loading from a cold boot, with each completely shut down before starting up the game (no use of quick resume for example).
• All platforms were connected to the same wired internet connection with tests done on the same day at approximately the same time.
• All consoles were as they were sold, with default storage and stock parts. PC specs were: Intel Core i7-7700K CPU; Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 1080 GPU; 16 GB Corsair Vengeance 3200 MHz RAM; 250 GB Crucial MX500 SSD (game only, OS on different drive).
• A public online session test was not conducted due to the inherent variation in internet connections for a peer to peer based game, and the lack of control in the number of people to connect to in any given public session.
• A second online session test was conducted for each platform after PC consistently took a surprisingly long time on the first load. This involved going back to story mode (but not exiting the game) then loading another invite only online session.

    Conclusions

    • We'll get PC out of the way first since it's so contingent on individual specs, but even so I was surprised it lagged behind the Series X and PS5 despite the game being on an SSD and having a reasonably decent setup. The big surprise was the initial loading for GTA Online, taking more than double the length of time of even the old Xbox One. This wasn't a one off either as it's always like this on the first load. More info has come out about this recently actually, see here: https://nee.lv/2021/02/28/How-I-cut-GTA-Online-loading-times-by-70/

    • The successive online load tests showed shorter times across the board by around 1-2 seconds for all platforms except PC, which saw an almost 2 minute improvement. Loading into online for the first time after a cold boot obviously requires a little extra than subsequent loads for all platforms, but there's clearly something wrong for PC's initial load as it was easily the best in successive loads.

    • In general there was a clear distinction between the sub generations of consoles, with both PS5/XSX always being quicker than PS4 Pro/XB1 X, which in turn were always quicker than base PS4/XB1. However it's also clear that the gap in performance between PS5/XSX and PS4 Pro/XB1 X is much larger than the gap between PS4 Pro/XB1 X and base PS4/XB1.

    • Another surprising result, given how badly the game runs on the base XB1 in comparison to the base PS4, is how in the initial load test every Xbox beat out every Playstation within each sub-generation. While the Sony consoles bucked that trend to some degree in loading online, the differences there were a lot smaller and the Microsoft consoles did very well.

    • The quickest way to get into GTA Online from a cold boot as of the publishing of this video is by playing on an Xbox Series X, with Playstation 5 taking 10 seconds longer. You save yourself approximately 1 minute 15 seconds of loading times in this situation if you upgrade to the new gen consoles from a PS4 Pro or XB1 X, and around 1 minute 45 seconds if you're upgrading from the base PS4 or XB1. The slowest way to get into GTA Online from a cold boot is by playing the game on PC, being more than 10 seconds slower than the next worst of the PS4.

It's rare for me to do a video without voiceover so it's strange to be talking to you all via this description box (assuming anyone reads it) but nevertheless I hope this was an interesting video. I figured since I recently upgraded to the new gen platforms and have one of each console in the house, I was perfectly placed to do a thorough test of this. And there's no better time than now before the enhanced editions release and the PS5/XSX versions of the game diverge from the PS4/XB1 versions. Let me know your thoughts in the comments, and thanks for watching!

  2. Did the character location affect the results?
Because the XSX spawned in as Michael while the PS5 was Franklin. The invite only load for both of those consoles went to the same apartment/office and Michael was closer to the apartment/office
Edit: at least it seemed closer

  3. I know its late in the game with the ps5 out. If you install an SSD in the ps4/pro, the loading time is faster.

I had to put in a new hard drive in my regularps4 (Samsung EVO 1TB) because the old one was crapping the bed with errors and crashes. I was amazed how quickly gtav loaded into sp. I have a video of my old one on my phone. No more crashes. If anyone is experiencing crashes, etc. Try putting in a new drive. That’s if you’re not planning on buying a ps5 of course

Other games will load faster as well.

  4. I have a low end gaming pc & the free version of gta v from the epic game store. A cold boot gives me enough time to set up & complete the cayo perico heist on my ps4 & the pc is still loading 😆😆

  5. Would have been interested in loading times on PC w/ the game on an m2 ssd. That's where I have GTA installed on my machine and I can get a crew lobby going ~62 seconds for initial load, with similar times for successive loads as you saw. Seems the SATA SSD is slowing things down for you.

  6. The PC loading times seem weird to me.

I'm loading the game from a Sata SSD on a PC with i7 8700k and RTX 3080.

    Cold Boot: 25 seconds
    Invite only: 15-20 seconds

No matter if first time or not.

  7. Replace the PC GTA Online initial load stock spoiler for 70% more traction or get Rockstar to buff the code like that one dev did. My PS4 has a 2TB SSD and it takes 1 minute and 27 seconds to get into story mode and 56 seconds to get into an invite-only. I haven't tested on my PS4 Pro yet

  8. Optimisation versus raw power. The affordable PC storage pipeline is a long, loong way behind.

The king is dead. Long live the king. Bow down to your new console overlords. Ya hate to see it…

  9. the load times are inexcusable. especially on pc. I spent more time staring at a loading screen than I did actually playing the game. rockstar can kiss my ass, absolutely not buying gta 6.

  10. Why didn't you load into the same area for story mode? Might not make much difference but you had some load into Franklins house and others into Micheals, even if they were on the same platform.

  11. GTA V on the Xbox consoles run at 900p with lower graphics settings than the PlayStation consoles and GTA V on the PlayStation consoles run at 1080p with higher graphics settings than the Xbox consoles. Meaning the Xbox Series X has an easier job than the PlayStation 5 with loading times, so that needs to be taken into consideration here.

Also you could literally take a casual piss break in the time PC takes to load into GTA Online. 😂
