  1. Interesting take. I'm on PlayStation and switch only and i will probably never buy a Xbox again. (Btw i was exclusive to Xbox 360 in that generation)

Now to be clear it's not because I don't like Xbox but here is how i see it:
Xbox and PlayStation to me are too similar boxes. They play 90% of the same content. It's not that I can't afford owning both but I can't justify buying two 500 dollar systems that do basically exactly the same thing.

But the biggest problem for me is that I've got hundreds and hundreds of bucks invested in a digital library on PlayStation that I'm not willing to say goodbye too.
I don't want to start a new digital library on Xbox cause then I'm stuck with another library of games and I'm already invested in two. (Also switch)

Now if GP comes to switch or Xcloud will come to switch or even as an app on my smart tv I'll be all over it! But until then I'm not going to invest
Which doesn't mean i don't think GP is a great service cause I do and i wish I could get into it without having to fork over 300 – 500 bucks to access it.

  2. Here is the thing about game pass, I keep hearing "it's an amazing value" I have GPU and 95% of the games are filler for me, they are games I have zero interest in playing. MS doesn't release enough new first party content to even bother mentioning day one releases at the moment and they've been terrible about releasing games the entire time GP has been a thing. When I ask people who talk about "the value" which games they actually play on GP they may bring up one game but that's about it, they can't name a ton of games that actually make them happy about the service so it sounds like marketing talk more than actual satisfaction with the service. Someone like Jaffe who likes short indie style games yea maybe it's awesome for you but most people like AAA experiences and GP is light on that stuff when it comes to anything less than 2 years old.

I'm someone who generally buys about 15 games a year and have at times bought more than 20 so you'd think this service would be something that appeals to me as a way to save money. I don't buy many xbox games because I'm sick of Gears, Halo and never cared for Forza, I am excited for a new proper fable sequel but that's YEARS away, anything else on the service that I would want to play I already have, just saying "games" means nothing if they aren't games that you actually want.

Most of the studios MS picked up are AA level studios and quite a few of them only worked on Xbox anyway so I think some people are overestimating the amount of games they'll be getting, the Bethesda games are all games that would have come to xbox anyway so there is no net gain there they are just exclusive because they are taking traditional multiplatform games away from other platforms. I have heard Jaffe say "So what if this doesn't work, it's not your money" well in a way it is because if you've invested in the xbox ecosystem and one day they just decide "screw it this isn't making enough money for us let's just flush the whole thing" how many studios will be shut down and xbox fans favorite series stop being made? how long before xbox online games stop being supported? how long before console production is stopped etc.

  3. Im subbed to both Game Pass and PSPlus. But i spend much more time on PSPlus because I'm catching up to a lot of the PS3 exclusives I missed out on. I played Game Pass for Gears 4 and 5 and havent touched it since. Xbox is really lacking its own set of strong exclusives. Halo and Gears havent found their stride after their OG devs left the series, Fables been MIA, Crackdown 3 disappointed a lot of people. The Xbone resembles the 360 at the end of the generation, strong 3rd party support. But only 1 or 2 strong exclusives. Sony nurtured all their first party developers for decades. Microsoft didn't really give Bungie or Epic a lot of reasons to continue developing exclusively for their systems. Maybe a bit off topic but its why I think overall the PSPlus has a more appealing selection of games that dont have rereleases or ways to play anywhere else.

  4. Interesting what Jaffe say about barrier to play, and that companies want there to be as frictionless as possible.
Its interesting because the real reason why the new gen consoles have SSDs is not to make the games better but to make getting people into the game with less friction. Sony and microsoft are battleing for peoples time thats why getting into the game as easy as possible is so important.

  5. Im a bit confused saying games like TLOU2,RDR2 and GOW are going away, his he saying games wont have have these spectacle cinematic blockbuster stories? I disagree, I think we will see more of this because of better tools, easier mo cap, procedural generation and better game engines in general.

  6. I think your right Jaffe.
-The people who say that a subscription service will decrease the quality of games don't understand the psychology of it.
-Games on gamepass will have to hold players' engagement regardless of whether they're good or not, because gamers wont feel that sense of requirement to finish a game because they payed full price.
-Because of that "low barrier of entry", good quality games will get better engagement and bad quality games wont.
-Also those indie games that people wouldn't normally play could also see and increase in engagement because of this too.

-I think there are two type of the people that don't like gamepass. Hardcore PlayStation fans that dislike anything Xbox And gamers who are 100% physical media that try to justify "owning games on disc".

  7. Game Pass does not and will not remove the option to buy a game. I play many games on Game Pass that I would never considered purchasing and I buy the games I want to keep. 💚

  8. The whole Quality thing came from what they see from free to play and Gacha designed games. so what I gathered is its like comparing if games you purchase are released broken a lot these days, what do you expect from subscription games. Microsoft's first Game-pass exclusive for Series Console "The Medium" came and support this rhetoric earlier this year with also Halo being delayed after looking meh and got hit by the community. I expect some good stuff to come with the already great indies that plaster the page. not a bad rant as I also think about these angles to help understand everyone point of view. I know it may seem like its just the huge spectacles that are appealing to the Sony games but It's the extra stuff also that the devs add that people get attached too. I love Fighting games and which tend to be on the small side of the budgets in terms of a Capcom games and even smaller for others like Anime fighters. I've also been big on indies, Transistors, Resogun, Journey, Limbo and the list goes on of some of my favs on just PS4. Pretty Graphics dont make a game (for me atleast) if the gameplay doesnt hold up I usally drop the game real quick, so now I wait and see before I buy because I know what I want from gameplay. The proof is in the pudding, the glue to the tard etc.

  9. I think that for most "core" gamers, gaming is all about immersion. Now, tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't the insane attention to detail why games like TLOU2, GTA5 etc. are so freakin' expensive? The difference between a AA and a AAA game isn't a Avenger movie vs an artistic great movie, its the difference between Resident Evil and Dawn of Fear. Not saying all AA games suck, but they can obviously never compete with AAA productions within the same genre.

  10. movies average 1.5-2 hours its why netflix makes more sense than gamepass. Games are like 20-70 hours so most people are playing 1-2 a month. Its just a completely different type of thing.

  11. Why I don't like GamepAss as a gamer? Easy, just look at Xbox games since it's inception: Lower quality, less budget, less games or almost none. The proof is in the puding. Any true gamer should agree.
Jaffe, on every other topic you talk about I agree with you, except your constant caping for that horrible service that killed Xbox. Anyway I like your videos, thanks.

  12. Gamepass isn't special if you already own what's available on it. I mean if you are poor then I guess it's cool. I tried it but I don't have an Xbox or plan on getting one. The games I did play I just bought on my laptop. I don't care for the streaming of the games themselves. It's really blocky and scrambled looking sometimes.

  13. David, being a dev, you're too close and can't see the wood or the trees. Hardcore means different things to different people, so let's define a group of players that describe themselves as hardcore. A hardcore gamer is not about quantity. Playing thousands of good games on Game Pass. A hardcore gamer is about having very high standards and only playing the best. Not good games. Not even great games. We are talking about exceptional masterpieces. Quality over quantity. It's the player who wants to maximise his leasure time by only playing the very best, gaming has to offer. The Game Pass pricing model cannot fund the level of quality in games that hardcore gamers require. Deal with it and stop trying to white knight Game Pass.

  14. David I consider myself a hardcore gamer who matches that criterior but that does no mean I can't find value in lower budget games if they have the depth. I also play Subnautica, Tropico 6, Planet Coaster, Snooker 19, PGA 2k21 and even Farming Simulator. But you have to agree, those games are the best in that class, so I consider it high quality gaming. Yes those games have flaws and do not have the polish and scope of the masterpieces, they are as good as it gets in those genres. I don't consider hadcore as comprehensive. Play every game out there as a reviewer to find hidden gems. My leasure time is limited and it's filled with the highest quality games I can find. Not everything you can eat for $1 on Game Pass.

  15. My take on the entire “game pass will bring about lower quality and only GAAS games” is simple. For the past 30 years of gaming without game pass their has always been low quality games and also very high quality games right? Also there can be GAAS and SP games. Microsoft is putting out a game like avowed, single player FPS RPG, while also having games like sea of thieves. Microsoft learned from the atrocious monitization in Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5 and Halo 5, Sea of thieves has been hailed as “the best monitization in gaming” . If they continue this approach with other GAAS along with 3rd party and 1st party bangers then it’ll be great.

  16. I think gamepass is a great idea, to be honest I think it will be the future of gaming. Just like Netflex, gamers will pay a subscription of around 15 bucks a month and have a library of games to download and play.

  17. I don't think it's a reaction to the service per say as much as it is a fanboys reaction to other fanboys being in everybody's face about it. I don't think anyone is denying subscription services are the future. That being said, the service seems pretty good but as of may 2021 is extremely overrated.

  19. The funny thing about all of this is Gamepass gets the lionshare of the press and PR. I'm not sure that anyone has really been paying attention but PS Now has been quietly loading up the content. I took a look at it today and was really blown away by how much more fleshed out it is. PlayStation is definitely paying attention and PS Now looks better than ever. Not sure if this means PlayStation will be ramping up the promotional efforts for PS Now or if they are finally bundling the service within PS Plus (rumored) but either way both services ae outstanding values.

  20. I don't hate game pass, I don't hate Netflix either. My issue is more about supplanting physical media with digital. I've seen so many times companies remove titles that players already paid for and alter games due to censorship. I don't believe I own a game unless I have a physical copy that's my umbrage.

  21. I think the fear around game pass is that it will lower the quality standard for games in the long run. It won’t happen right away but if Bethesda published another over promised and even more broken game the excuse in the future could be: “Well, at least it’s on game pass and you didn’t pay 70 bucks for it.” Like the App Store and the free to play market – it seems like a race to the bottom to me. The game quality on game pass will probably diminish and then balance out slightly according to audience feedback. In the worst case scenario – Sony starts doing the same thing and we end up in Atari country once again. In the best case scenario – we get a lot of good games, the bigger ones someway maintain the quality standard and more often we get smaller more experimental AAA titles that wouldn’t have been made if not for something like game pass being the industry standard.
