How Resident Evil Village Captures 25 Years Of The Franchise

Resident Evil Village manages to encapsulate everything the franchise has attempted over its 25 years, from its highest points to lowest, in this one game.

Resident Evil has transformed, molded, and redefined itself over and over again. From its genre defining breakthrough in 1996, to the co-op Hollywood action packed Resident Evil 6, the franchise has attempted a lot of different things over the years — some more successful than others.

Over its 25 years, Resident Evil cemented the survival horror genre, revolutionized the third person shooters with Resident Evil 4’s influential perspective, and managed to bring survival horror back into the mainstream once again with Resident Evil 7. Village encapsulates all of that, and more, pushing the franchise into new heights while doubling down on everything from the series’ past.

In the above video, Kurt Indovina ties every element back to where it was previously introduced in the franchise. From Lady Dimitrescu to Resident Evil 3’s iconic Nemesis replicated with Lady Dimitrescu, to its convoluted lore with Mother Miranda, and its similarities to CODE: Veronica. While there’s plenty of similarities to Resident Evil 4, some aren’t as apparent as others, like the ghost dolls from House Beneviento, and its direct inspiration from RE4’s unreleased prototype codenamed the “Hallucination” version, which featured creepy porcelain dolls that protagonist Leon Kennedy had to fight.

  1. Honestly, HATE FP and didn’t like 7 that much which I didn’t end up playing. However, I liked 8 because it brought back most of RE, with the unfortunate FP, but it was pretty good. Liked Ethan in this one and I’m also glad they brought back buff Chris and changed his model back. Hopefully now they can focus on RE4 Remake CAUSE WE NEED THAT SHIT 🤟🏻

  2. Resident evil 7 was not the first time capcom attempted first person in a RE game. Resident Evil Survivor on the ps1 takes that honor. Largely a forgotten entry in the franchise.

  3. Awesome video! Honorable mention to Resident Evil Zero, which gave us a villain reincarnated into leeches which he can mass into an army with opera singing. Doesn’t get anymore “excuse me but wtf” than that.

  4. Village didn’t do much for me. Didn’t like the storyline and hated how it tried to tie in with Spencer. Just made things even more convoluted. The series needs to stop coming back to Umbrella and Raccoon City.

  5. I think Resident evil 8 is a great celebration of the series and it's probably my favorite resident evil for the moment.
That being said I hope the next isn't afraid to have its own identity and doesn't just celebrate RE but elevate it.

  6. After finishing the Castile section , yes this game is very resident evil , I don’t understand the people who say other wise . Just because there’s werewolf’s and vampires means nothing

  7. All the stuff said here aside, why haven't I seen a video talking about village story for what it is? Not a world saving quest, not a over the top Hollywood action movie game, simply a man who will stop at nothing to save is daughter, willing to die, versus a woman who has stopped at nothing for a 100years to get her daughter back, the story is so down to earth, real possible actions and decision one with the will would make to save the ones they love. A faceless man that could be you, fighting everything in your path no matter what happens to you, to ensure your loves safety, something we can all get behind. That's why I believe this is the best story so far
