Head to https://www.squarespace.com/nostalgianerd to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code NOSTALGIANERD…. Please note, these games use *FLASHING LIGHTS*. It was bound to happen eventually. I couldn’t get away with it forever. VHS Gaming. It was inevitable. The Action Max, Video Challenger, Hasbro Control Vision/NEMO, ViewMaster Interactive Vision, Sega Video Driver and everything inbetween. It’s all here, and I’ve had to endure it. So I thought I’d dive in with the key question: How it conned us, and what I mean by that is; how any of these “game consoles” convinced us that they were something worth dabbling with in the first place.
Personally, having gulped an exceptionally large dose in one go, I don’t want to play another VHS based game for a several months, possibly years. Thanks to Quang for letting me borrow his Interactive Vision (even if he doesn’t know I did).
Thanks again to RetroReplay. Please find his view Interactive Vision video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcNBkPz5Yvs

Also I forgot to mention in the video, but the average length for a Video Challenger video is about 7 minutes. 20 for the Action Max. 10 for the Sega Video Driver. 30 for the Interactive Vision and the Toby Terrier bundled video is 3 minutes… THREE. Basically, you're not really getting a lot for your money in terms of "game material".
Yeah, Topaz Video Enhance AI – I knew it. Upscaled faces from old VHS footage look too happy
was not expecting to learn so much, i always thought captain power used infrared, & didnt know they could shoot each other.
i was a bit confused at first, with the part about the friendly fire function because i thought you were suggesting it was related to the strobe color & comparing them. if that were the case, you could get scored for friendly fire just by missing. so to clarify a little after thinking it over, what i understand is that..
1. the light gun needs to see white to recognize a hit & the corner sensor fires simultaneously
2. when both sensors see white, they agree & it counts as an enemy hit
3. if the gun doesnt see white it counts as a miss & the corner sensor is ignored
4. if the gun sees white & the corner doesnt, it counts as a friendly hit
5. proper cheating requires aiming both sensors at a light bulb not just the gun
technically it would be possible to get a bad score if you could fire as a new field is being drawn, while the lower corner would be drawn last & still have the previous frame image. im tempted to say it would be more accurate if the corner sensor were at the top, as most of the time you wouldnt be aiming at the bottom of the screen (so theres a shorter gap maybe), but if the target is generally at the center its kinda the same either way. so the sensors must be capturing more than 1 frame in order to interpret the strobe as a phase, & then the field timing isnt as susceptible to false positives, im guessing.
"LCD display"? Funny that you think there's even such a thing.
"AM in the morning"? Oops, "AM" already means "in the morning"!
I had video driver! It wasn't much, but I had a surprising amount of fun with it. It was fun to do multiple runs with friends and compare scores. Since it was identical every time, it of course got old, but I'm sure I still played it 25+ times, and we got it cheap back in the day. So why not
"Hence why he sounds like this"? The word "hence" already has the idea of "why" built in, so it's actually used like this:
"Hence his sounding like this."
"Intended, really, to watch movies at home." And recordings from TV, and recordings from VHS consumer cameras.
There was an excellent Star Trek TNG vhs board game which starred Robert O'Reily (who played Gowron on the show) as a Klingon who has hijacked the Enterprise whilst it was undergoing repairs. The players are the only crew left on the ship and the object of the game is to reach the bridge before the countdown ends and the ship is destroyed.
Wow, thanks for this VERY interesting video! I don't think I've seen a video about so many home-used non-interactive-gone-semi-interactive systems before! It was super intriguing to learn how these work! From here will you please show us some samples of what the Sesame Street tape looks like without the game console's video overlays?
VHS conned everyone about everything. Beta was way higher quality (DVD quality). VHS should never have existed.
I had the captain power stuff! It was cool
A video about DVD games could be a good subject.
Congratulations, that beat out Ed Bolian from Vinwiki on incorporating a sponsor into a video.
I actually had the Videosmarts when I was a kid. I can still remember one time I was playing with it when it was dinner time so I left it to go to dinner. While eating my parents and I could hear a voice but didn't know where it was coming from. It was the Videosmarts. If you weren't using it after a while it would start to say "turn me off" until you did so. My parents actually still had it until just recently when I think they gave it to someone. I would love to see a video about it on its own if there's enough content out there to do so.
If you think that the content on a VHS tape will respond to anything going on outside of the VCR, you haven't been conned. That's on you.
Fun fact: Captain Power was written by J. Michael Strazinski who also did Jayce and the Wheeled Wariors. In fact many of the writing and production staff of CP went on to work on B5.

Dude… LED!!! Not LCD!!!
Wow. So much nostalgia watching this! I had a few of these consoles. I enjoyed Captain Power but Action Max not so much. My brothers and I returned the Action Max to where we got it. The dumpster in our apartment complex.
My friend got an action max, I laughed at him.
I said I'd rather play the Atari VCS/2600 than pretending to play a game, it's just a VCR video, you don't affect anything happening on the screen. He got mad, he played it and it ended up in the trash.
