Today I wanted to spend some time talking about the MMO genre in gaming. League of Legends announced it’s MMORPG about a year ago and I couldn’t be more excited, being someone who’s always loved the genre of game myself. So to close out the year I thought it would be fun to take some time looking at the past, present, and future of MMORPGs.

  1. This is another more chill discussion video but some of the larger docs I've been working on should start coming out next month 🙂

I've also got more projects for more channels I'll keep you guys updated on. I know content has been sparse on my channel recently but big things are coming in the future.

Thanks for sticking with me all these years, here's to 2022 🙂

  2. the Lord of the Rings Online was my first MMO, and after going through Tera Online, Runescape, Rift, Black Desert Online, and World of Warcraft, it's the only one that I'm still playing today. Being a massive LotR nerd helpos, but the world is delightful and the playerbase is probably the most genuine and loving community i've ever been a part of. Sure, the 14 years since its release have not been kind to the game, but I (and many others) still love it. I'm tentatively hopeful that the League MMO will have the same feeling of a warm hug when booting up the game.

  4. Both the video and the comment section are a bit mystifying for me. Many people here (not everyone) but you included seem rather disconnected from the current MMO scene and seem to be asking for an experience that very likely already exists in stuff like GW2 or ESO, not to mention Final Fantasy XIV.

Dyrus has been playing it for over a year and so has Sneaky just to mention two names within the Leaghesphere or whatever you wanna call it, not to mention the massive boom the game had in July with people like Rich Campbell and Asmongold. MMOs aren't dying, and they've actually never been in a better place. XIV is doing so well that they had to stop selling the game because they're at literal full capacity, since you mentioned "empty" worlds when mentioning WoW. Otherwise I would have recommended XIV. Usually their free trial comes with the base game plus the entire first expansion Heavensward up to Level 60 with no limit on play time. It's a bit of a meme, but it's also true. I've been playing it since 2013.

I don't know Gbay. It's clear to me that this video comes from a genuine honest place, but also what seems to be one willingly ignorant. Did you ever give the three games I mentioned a proper try? The timing of this video couldn't be worse also, since XIV is temporarily not available to new players, and you won't hear the end of how good the game is. No no… you don't get it… it IS THAT good. No no, seriously it REALLY IS that good. I have no doubt in my mind that Riot is looking very closely at FFXIV to build their MMO. Just don't be surprised when Riot's MMO is more or less an FFXIV-2.

On the other hand, if you've tried the games mentioned above, a good continuation of the video would be to explain why they didn't appeal to you, though most people who give XIV a proper try end up hooked.

  5. MMOs are fun but in our day the reason why games like Fortnite and League are doing so well compared to MMOs is because short bursts of explosive action packed gameplay is a lot more accesible to people.

In our age people can't really afford to sit down and play to grind hours and hours with school or full time jobs. People just wanna sit down and play a quick game inbetween breaks or while they are resting. Thats why each and every day mobile gaming industry is growing and growing to the point where it is actually competing and beating console and PC.

If the league MMO will thrive, it is because Runeterra is a BALLER fucking universe to invest into and anything league of legends related that isn't the moba is very polished and positive experience.

  6. Riot is not beating Blizzard , they are just following the same path . Create a selling IP , improve upon it , expands it with side games . Everyone keep saying Riot is taking over , frankly they didnt see how Blizzard dominated the early 2000s .
Also , The Packers will not win the super bowl , you know why ? Cause we them Boys .

  7. I have also been excited for this game, I hope it will turn out well.

By the way, any chance you could use a more comfortable background than a kind of white wall? This burns eyes no matter if watched on a big monitor or a smartphone screen :X.

  9. I just hope they look at FFXIV and go, "We want that type of community".

Never have I experienced the type of wholesome and inclusive community that I have from FFXIV. It's truly amazing and one of the things that REALLY makes it the best MMO imo.

  10. 16:43 Which makes me appreciate FF14 right now even more because that is an MMO that I honestly could say that doesn't suck. Everyone do treat people with decency and respect that are hard to come by and it's not like they are cold or the community felt very dead either. Sure there are bad apples in the basket but that pretty much is the minority in my experience.

  11. I think guilds and clans in mmos make you nicer. The people in them are people you will interact with for a long time, so you're encouraged to try to get along with people you disagree with. On reddit you probably will never meet the person again so you might as well insult them if you're angry.

I also agree with you about runescape's world, and how useless spells and objects can add a lot to a game's atmosphere.

I think your rambling videos are often very good, you're being too hard on yourself for them.

  12. This video not about what LoL MMO need to be to become successful. It’s what you want it to be. Gamers nowadays don’t looking for “real worlds” in games, they want to have fun and fast, especially LoL players, that will be main target audience for new project. I understand your opinion, but there is no place for new MMO with old values.
I'm sure if they make this game the way you described it, it will fail.

  13. I would love it if the game was more like Runescape. Although if Ghostcrawler is running the ship I fear we will just have something more derivative of World of Warcraft. I feel leveling should actually be an important part of the gameplay experience and not something you rush through to get to the "real game". It feels so bizarre to me that most MMO's have adopted this model. It feels great to steadly grow stronger and face interesting new challenged along the way. I think if you can take Runescape's leveling experience while making it feel more like gameplay and less like clicking a tree 100,000 times then you could have something great.
