GameCube games are so weird. I've had more work without issue that look like a kid took it and ran it over gravel And then ones like that I've tried to repair, they stopped working lol.

The controller ports are modular parts on the PS1 fat. Just snap in a new port. Clean with rubbing alcohol. Windex has soap

Why throw away DVD cases when you could lot them up?
If you have a multimeter you could check the PS1 lasers and adjust the potentiometer with a screwdriver. Quite an easy fix if the laser itself isn´t busted.
