I made Cyberpunk 2077… BUT IT'S 2D

How cool would it be if Cyberpunk 2077 had a 2D DLC? I spent the last week making Cyberpunk 2077 into a 2D game using Unity. Here’s how I did it! Did I accomplish my goal?

*For clarity regarding statement about going full time with Neversong: I secured funding from a publisher with a very tiny demo, and then secured funding on Kickstarter with around 50% of the game complete about a year later. Thought I’d clarify. Realized after uploading that’s how it panned out 🙂

  1. Well there is a personal perceived FPS, what the human eye and brain can process for example, the authors of a 2014 study out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that the brain can process an image that your eye sees for only 13 milliseconds — a very rapid processing speed.
That’s especially rapid when compared with the accepted 100 milliseconds that appears in earlier studies. Thirteen milliseconds translate into about 75 frames per second, and possibly a flicker rate eg images we don't fully complete but smear with the rest of the imagesmaking it more likely to be about 90fps.

  2. Thomas, I love the way you make scenery come to life, the fogs, strobes, small flying particles, the waterfall at the start of the level, really make it come together nicely. One if your best videos IMO. Bravo man, keep up the good work… I'd love to see you pick apart this code for us, I think you could pull at least another 2 videos from this same project. Thanks!

  3. Awesome! That's hardcore. I got your class, but I'm waiting to start it til my new laptop comes in. I held out for the 3060 models to get released and they come out at the end of the month. I'll actually have a computer that doesn't crash every hour to develop on. Mine was good some 7 years ago when I got it, but it was even a bit older then and couldn't even run android studio properly back then. It's pathetic now, so I'm hyped to have the new one and get back into development! I got my MBA in the meantime, so I feel prepped to manage my day job and part-time game dev til I'm ready to go full-time game dev! This really motivates me, so thank you for showing me what can really be accomplished when you put some good old fashioned effort into it!

  4. Thomas, I can see the amount of work you did in edition for this video. It's awesome, but I just want to let you know that this is not a demand, I come here for the valuable info you always give on your videos, with or without this stellar edition!

  5. Just got your course! Honestly, I'm impressed with the production of your youtube videos, website, and your general vibe in making something that seems so daunting appear doable. I appreciate the new year discount!

  6. 3:00 Hate to break it to you, Thomas, but real life does have a framerate. Its based on the plank distance, the smallest distance possible between quantum particles. The smallest unit of time possible is the time it takes light to travel one unit of Plank distance. Nothing can happen faster than that. If you could shoot a bulet at that speed it would theoretically be able to pass through walls as far as I know, because it wouldn't have time to interact with the partickes making up the wall. But ofc, you na't make anyhting with mass actually move that fast.

So, yeah, checkmate, you cna in theoretical physics shoot bullets through walls. Freaking frame-rate dependant reality.

  8. Don't want to give away too much, specially the storyline, in case someday I do this. I've always wanted to create the first "AAA" 2D game with elements taken from Skyrim, COD Zombies, Fable, and Soul Calibur. Level based with a large world map, online/local co-op, battle/survival modes, and an online fighting mode with other players. Want it all hand drawn/painted. With also photographs filtered to appear drawn/painted to help reduce length of making the game. Excellent atmospheric lighting and god rays. I want the characters and enemies to look realistic and fluid. Such as the fluid motions from Fancy Pants, but more realistic movement. I'm honestly sick of the classic 80's/90's rigid look that people still make to this day. Though I still do enjoy playing those here and there. I want the "next generation" that could potentially sell as a AAA title realistically for maybe 40 bucks with enough character progression, story, and length. In all honesty my game idea would probably be better as a 3D title, but that would take way too much time and I really want to bring 2D back in the way it felt 30 years ago, but with realistic touches.
