Investors seem to have discovered Famicom games, driving the prices up on auctions to ridiculous amounts.

  1. What it is people can't afford NTSC at the moment due to rampant speculation. And so, it's the next frontier for collector's that WERE on a budget, but now because of videos like this – there goes the neighborhood. 😆

  2. They're just pushing people to emulate because you'd have to be some kind of fool to buy high during speculation if you're investing. If you're buying to enjoy and keep – all the power to you.😉

  3. I was importing Famicom games on a small scale before the pandemic. Shipping took a while, but cost was like $2 a cart shipped and a lot of the sellers combined shipping . Then when that mess hit shipping costs immediately went to $20 an item so I quit importing for the foreseeable future . Personally, I like the Japanese artwork on the carts and all of the crazy colors.

  4. I can't imagine anyone not collecting a product due to "xenophobia"?! I think you guys are stretching on that a bit. Besides, "video game" collecting it still in it's infancy.

  5. Even in Japan the famicon and super games were alot cheaper then the western ones. I got the first 3 Mario's for $4.50, all of the dragon quests series carts for $40 and 3 of them were still in box.

  6. When I went to Japan 10 years I go I got the boxed Ocarina of Time for N64 (which looks awesome) and some used boxed super famicom games like Mega Man X and Super Metroid. Look cool on a shelf even if they aren’t worth much.

  7. Over half of my SNES collection is Super Famicom games. I have the Megaman X series and Rushing Beat games for SFC. Way cheaper to get the Japanese versions. Started getting a bunch of gameboy games too since they aren't region locked. The import scene is definitely more fun for me.

  8. The bulk of my collection is JPN so this is definitely of interest to me. I don't have much interest in selling, but I'd rather not have the JPN market go the way if NA.

  9. I think the history of the Japanese releases and American releases are different because they are the stories of two different markets. If American gamers care more about the old physical releases than Japanese gamers do then the American games should be worth more. The American gamer interest really shouldn't translate to a boost in the Japanese market. This feels very artificial and temporary.

  10. I grew up with the European Sega Mega Drive library but collect almost exclusively for the Japanese library. Why? Because they're so much more interesting and "collectable", and you don't have to know Japanese for the vast majority of the games. Oh, and full color manuals with beautiful illustrations vs. those awkward wide black & white manuals in 8 different languages…

  11. I’ve been getting more into Famicom/SFC lately because of the releases that didn’t come out over here and as a way to pick up titles where the NA release has gotten way too expensive. If the speculators are going to start snatching those up, it’s going to be a huge pain in the butt. I’ve been trying to push the idea of importing among my local gaming group, but if this is going to drive the prices up there’s not going to be a point much longer.

  12. Xenophobia is a cop-out explanation for a plainly obvious issue.

    The most practical explanations are:
    1) lack of history or nostalgia with the Japanese version; and
    2) the language barrier diminishes the value proposition. If I can't understand it, I can't use it. If I can't use it, it has little or no value for me, or anyone like me.

Xenophobia has nothing to do with this.

  13. famicom games USED to be cheap. I started collecting famicom games about 10-12 years ago (I've got somewhere between 400-500 now. I was nabbing carts for $.50-1.00 each, sealed games for under $5. Good luck finding them under $5-10 for loose now.
